I'm taking the initiative and declaring the 2020 Spring Fling officially cancelled. Some have suggested a Fall Fling instead, which I think is a good idea. That said, please vote on a date. Please only vote if there is a high likelihood you would attend if it were held on that date. Feel free to remark on the pros and cons of various dates in the forum. We should be mindful of when hotel rooms are cheap.

I hope nobody will mind that I didn't list Sep 5, as that is Burning Man week.

We should be mindful that the Global Gaming Expo is Oct 6-8. Some members make trips for both the Fling and the Expo. Planning it on one of the bordering weekends would probably be convenient for them.

October sounds good to me. A little cooler and not too much happening in town. Monday, October 12 is
Columbus Day 2020 in United States (federal holiday).

The MN educators association meeting is Oct 15th. That week becomes sort of a fall break. My wife works in schools, so she could join me on either abutting weekend. So the 10th or 17th would be good dates for mqw and me.

I am I think available any weekend except October 3. American Society of Anesthesiologist annual meeting that weekend. Before I retired I would go to Vegas every year on the Wednesday after the ASA meeting. So if the group picks October 10, I'd probably go to Vegas Wednesday October 7 - Sunday October 11.

I voted for 10/3 and 10/10.

If I make it to Vegas in the fall at all, it’ll be for G2E, so…

I'm taking the initiative and declaring the 2020 Spring Fling officially cancelled.

O.K., so I have now cancelled both my hotel reservations and my flight reservations for April/May.

My calendar for September through November is practically blank -- mostly just Labor Day, Columbus Day, Halloween, Election Day, then (later than the dates in the poll) Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Plus one dentist appointment and birthdays for a dozen friends and relatives. I just don't usually plan many things that far in advance. If I knew what the hotel and airline rates would be during those periods, it might make some difference to me, but at this point, I am rather open, so I haven't yet voted. Let me know of any factors that would influence a cheapskate, and maybe I'll choose a date for my vote.

Oh -- the topic of birthdays reminds me that if we had these Fall Frolics 2020 scheduled around October 17, we could celebrate the birthday of one of our regular members. I won't bother naming names, just in case that member doesn't want it mentioned.

I may be going to Aruba in October or November. We could hold it there as they have many casinos.

10-10-2020 has the most votes by far, it avoids EDC, and it's easy to remember a date like that. I say we make Oct 10 official. Can I get anyone to second the motion?

I'm in. My annual meeting ends Wednesday the 7th, assuming it is still a go. I'll come directly to Vegas that day and stay until Sunday. If by some unbelievable coincidence that is the weekend the Bills are playing in Las Vegas, that would be even better. (1/17 chance!)

I'd say that my wife and I are in, provided a number of assumptions hold:
(1) The Fall Fling is genuinely held on the announced dates.
(2) The Las Vegas establishments (casinos, hotels, restaurants, etc.) are back open for business, and we can get a room as we had reserved for a Spring gathering.
(3) Transportation services (airlines, rental cars) are operating and are available.
(4) Neither the pandemic nor any other such event has completely destroyed us -- if we are still around, I expect I will be in the mood.

BTW (although this probably isn't the appropriate thread for this), a friend from 60 or 65 years ago sent me a link to a YouTube video that had been shared with him. My wife and I enjoyed watching it several times, and you might, too. It is a family singing about how they are coping with their self-quarantine situation during the pandemic, and they use a variation of a song from Les Misérables. I am quite impressed with both the humor and the musical talent of this family.

This has the added advantage that the following Monday is Columbus Day, so some people may have a three-day weekend.

One thing you have not taken into account: the possibility of a Raiders home game that weekend. The NFL schedule is usually announced near the end of April.
Then again, that assumes the new stadium will be ready by then, or that, if it is not, they will play this season in Sam Boyd Stadium, which I doubt. San Diego has a football stadium no one seems to be using at the moment...

I rode past the stadium on my bike ride and can say that there are construction workers all over it like ants. I think the stadium will be ready. In my opinion, we should make Oct 10 official and take our chances with what will happen in the NFL that day.

When the unemployment rate was still listed as being less than 10% I was shocked. The number of 'essential' jobs that are not even closely essential that still exist is ridiculous. Add constructing a football stadium to the list.

Such as restaurants? You have to allow them to stay open simply because some people can't cook for themselves. But employ social distancing. Require that the restaurants become take-out only. While the business may suffer, at least they are still in business.

Add constructing a football stadium to the list.

You can't cherry-pick.

While I agree that the stadium isn't exactly essential, the construction industry as a whole is. Maybe it's exempt rather than essential because for the most part, it's an outdoor industry that practices social distancing almost by default. Whatever, it helps keep people employed.

And once the construction industry is exempt, then all the support for that industry must also be exempt. For example, the wholesale distributor of materials, which is where my day job is. I work for an electrical supply wholesale company in northern NJ. While our hours have been reduced, and our staff has been cut back as well, at least we're still operating, keeping the economy going to some small extent.

Frankly, it was in the early part of March that I started saying, there's no way we get out if this without a major recession.

I still feel that way, but it would be even worse if more essential businesses were deemed non-essential.

I think we are not really disagreeing. I am NOT saying construction should not be done now. I am against using the word 'essential' to rationalize them being allowed to work.
Doctor/nurse/respiratory therapist working in hospital- essential
Farmer- essential
Supermarket worker- essential

NOT ESSENTIAL but I'm Governor and I want them open because I feel it is better than if they are closed
Dry cleaner
Liquor store
lawn mower service
Restaurants for take out
Crafts stores

As I've said earlier, certain businesses, clearly not essential, can still be operated reasonably using social distancing rules.
My younger son works in a big office, only 6 employees, their office is 'certified' for 40 workers. He said he could easily work there using social distancing rules.
I believe the restaurant take out is one such business. But it is NOT essential.

With all of the convention cancellations, including CES going digital this year, is this still a possibility? I think it would be great with proper precautions. On a personal note, would like it to be the weekend of Oct 3 just because that's a birthday week for me and had already booked a trip to Vegas. This thread doesn't seem to have any recent posts but thought I would resurrect it so to speak.

Having been a long time lurker more recent member on the main BJ forums, I thought it would be very fun to meet some of the people in person whose posts I have followed through the years. I would understand if health concerns would relegate it back to Spring Fling 2021 but hey..........I remain guardedly optimistic. LOL

I plan on attending.... but won't be making any plans... if that makes any sense. If the group picks a date, I'll assess the situation way closer to the actual date before I would commit.

As original poster way back whence in SPRING before the world changed on us in so many ways, I wondered what the "usual" deal was as to places, provisions, etc. I'm willing to help/assist in whatever way I can IF this is something that CAN be done for fall. Just let me know.

If the Wizard says the 10th, then I can easily change my plans since Columbus Day follows. I just have to have a place to watch OU/TX game "Red River Shootout" IF they play since it's usually that weekend. Just please advise as to final date and plans.

As to above and as having been to Vegas fairly recently. (Left July 7) I think that all of your provisos above are being met so far. Most of the casinos are open; Pandemic has made them follow social distancing rules and masking. Transportation services are available (Planes limited capacity; same rules as to masking and separation of passengers.............so FAR) BUT rental cars and Uber/Lyft drivers are very limited I found out. Was told some 2400 less Uber drivers than usual in Vegas. And I can personally state that there were way fewer taxis at the hotels also. It too much longer than usual to get an Uber/Lyft driver than normal.

Obviously this is a fluid situation.

To my chagrin, you are most likely right and prudent. I just read the article from Harvard Med that said 13 states should shut down, including Nevada and OK (we were 13th) and that they recommended highly about half the States in total. I doubt that happens unless this stuff gets worse BUT for planning a gathering, discretion is the better part of valor, I assume.

Yeah, I suppose that's true. Especially with the travel. Busy airport, 3 hours on a packed plane, busy airport, questionable-cleaned hotel, then hours and hours in a casino.

Still, with 2 years between visits its gonna be bad to need to pay for lodging next spring. Probably have to pay the rack rate and not even casino rates. Ewwww.
