That's putting your light under a bushel, indeed. I will not see it on a regular basis, so won't be reminded. And your more casual user, just won't see it at all.

You know that you can buy a gift card and redeem the code yourself, right?
So if I bought $300 worth of cards thru the
Wiz, and spent the $300 myself thru the Wiz,
it's that a double whammy for him?

I would guess that they would not give anything for orders that you pay for by gift card, although I may be wrong on that. It's probably in their affiliate terms somewhere.

It says if an associate himself buys a card, he gets
no fee. But I suspect he gets no fee on what a
person buys with the card, Amazon would be paying
twice. That's why the fee is so high, 6%.

6% really does seem high. I get 3% cash back on my credit card (its the amazon visa, issued by chase) for buying something at amazon (gift cards count). So, if I buy a gift card through an affiliate link, they are paying out 9%? That seems very, very high. If that's true you can essentially buy amazon gift cards at a 9% discount. I'm surprised that you don't see them on sale for less than face value.

Chase is coughing up the 3%. The fine print might say "up to 3%". It's hard to get a proper accounting of card cashback, in my experience, and with most cards there is a limit to what you can get in a year.
Somebody said books would not be included. I was thinking 'books only' for the Wizard, as an author. Shows what I know.

But now that we know, it's gotta be more prominent. Near the TOP of each page.

Yes, but that's what they're offering. Amazon Affiliate Advertising Fee Page (login may be required)
I appreciate this site, and WoO, is not loaded with junk so that it loads quickly and there are no disractions. But perhaps you've carried the user-friendliness of this site too far? An add or a sales link or a donate button are no good if people don't see them, or if you have to tell people where to look for them.
Another thing you can do is start a book review/discussion thread, and post links direct to the books being reviewed.

It's not up to 3%; it's 3%. The accounting is easy; it's 3% on anything from amazon (1 or 2 % on everything else). I have had this card for years and never had a problem. I bought $2000 in gift cards at once a few years ago and I got my 3% with no problems.
The amazon card has no cashback limit. I know that some other cards do; this one doesn't
Quote: WizardThanks for all the suggestions, but I think that Amazon banner is going to only buy me a dinner once a month, at best. I'd rather not put it in an obnoxious place unless it pays well.
I think you have cause and effect the wrong way around, there.

I agree. I tried to help. I listed things that do work. I made hundreds a month. People have flat out said they will use the link to buy at Amazon.
Sometimes you have to help yourself and all it takes is being open to change.

It's Catch-22. He won't put a bigger, better located ad unless it pays well, but it won't pay well unless it's bigger and better located.
Put the ad for Amazon wherever you would like. It is your call; it is your site. My thought is that I will forget this and buy stuff from Amazon without clicking through the link. Why? I can't find my keys half the time. I call my kids three or four names of the other kids before I get it right. I forget where my beer was placed.
I visit this site every day and the link being visible to me every day will remind me...
Maybe I will even buy enough from Amazon this year for you to take the family to dinner!! Somewhere cheap, though...
Thanks for listening!

It does pay well. I've been here 4 years and
yesterday was the first time I ever scrolled
to the bottom of the page. Why would I, or
anybody, do that on purpose. The banner
will die there.

With all due respect, Mike, I also disagree. There is no reason to scroll to the bottom of the page to even see where the Amazon link is placed; once I see the "next page" navigation thing, I'm gone, having never seen the Amazon link. I do think you're seriously underestimating how much money is being spent at Amazon. I spent about 1500 last year there, and that was a low year for me, and I bet lower than many others on here. Would have been 50 or better for you, had I known enough to click thru this site. Please try moving it up where it will be seen and give it a few months before you dismiss the idea?
Quote: thecesspitI think you have cause and effect the wrong way around, there.
I agree. And I agree with Babs: there's a nice spot next to the page number boxes where it will fit without being obnoxious.
And so what if people think it's obnoxious? Those people wouldn't click thru, or respond to the donate link. So f--- 'em. Those of us who will happily use your Amazon link should be encouraged to do so without the challenge of finding the damn thing.

I generally agree with not having obnoxious advertising (I tend to block ads very aggressively -- I had the old bovada ads blocked because I found them very annoying) but I think that this one is fine.
I agree that it's best not to make the page less usable (if I have to scroll past ads to get to the usable part of the page, I'm blocking them for sure) but if it could be worked into the top part (as part of the WoV banner) and not take up any extra vertical space (ie, just steal some horizontal space from the WoV banner but don't make the thing taller) then I think it would be fine.

Quote: DRichI'm guessing we spend close to $5,000 a year at Amazon. Granted, now that they are charging Nevada sales tax we may not spend as much in the future.
Damn, I thought I bought a lot from Amazon. I don't even get up to $5k if I buy a TV and a game console in the same year.
It would need to be a "win" - "win" situation, of course.
Suggestion:
- Get a go-getter business student from UNLV to look into this. Arm them with the stats for the site, # of visitors, etc, etc.
ALSO, there seems like there is so much competition these days, would any locals type casino be willing to offer something to WoV members ? It would certainly drive some visitors to them, right ?
Put it next to the word "permalink" on every post.Quote: beachbumbabsI agree about the placement; I'd put it to the right of the title bar and shorten that by 1 1/2 inch; hardly anybody uses the whole title.

oops, you're not supposed to say that to Michael
Otherwise folks may not realize it is a link.
Also, please move it to the top somewhere.
I "lurk" everyday on my iphone and would never see the ad if I didn't know it was there.
Quote: WizardHowever, it was costly to develop the forum in the first place. It was all done by our own JB, at my expense. The only other forum based on this code is DT.
I agree that the forums here are much nicer and easier to read than many I have seen elsewhere.
So with that in mind, any opportunity to "license" this software to others ? Just a thought.

Moving the banner to the top is on my "to do" list. It isn't as easy as it sounds. However, I think it is pretty obvious that you're supposed to click the Amazon logo. With Internet marketing these days, nobody cares about views and clicks anymore, it is all about a profit generated by the person clicking.

Sure! I'm happy to sell licenses to this forum software. Any interested party should contact me.

Go to a drugstore, get any boxed product and read the warnings for it. If none strike you as so obvious even a brain-damaged chimpanzee on the late stages of Alzheimer's drunk and stoned would obviously be aware of it, then proceed as you were.

a) Perhaps JB would have some ideas / leads for potential customers ?
b) Hire a omputer/business major "Intern" from UNLV and set them loose on this !

The top is no good. The only time we see that is when going to a new page. Normal surfing brings us directly to the latest post, ignoring the top of page.
Stick it in that white area between the RSS feed link and the page number / jump to links. That's a spot we always see.

Never assume.
Fully agree. Recently a commercial message board that I'd frequented daily for more than ten years and was about as good as WoV "upgraded" and I haven't been back but the once to take a look. A complete disaster as have been most website upgrades in the Web 2.0 era IMO.Quote: JohnnyQI agree that the forums here are much nicer and easier to read than many I have seen elsewhere.
People just don't like change especially once you get used to something. I like it way better, I used to never visit before, I didn't like it, It was not pleasing to the eye. Now I do visit more often(I will even be making a deposit in the new casino). It seems sleek and more organized to me, also easier to navigate.Quote: chickenmanFully agree. I think NEW people will like it as well. From my understanding, NEW people are the ones that pay the bills. I doubt long time returning people have very little value.
Does the percentage work if we are buying on a foreign Amazon site?
Question 2.
It seems you have "delegate" sites in Mexico and in Germany. Or they are at the least using some of your (translated) stuff. What are the conditions? I assume you get a royalty fee for intellectual property?
(Nothing concrete at all, yet, but I have been thinking about asking you the permission to publish French translations of your stuff...)
A great discussion going discussing books Great books nobody has ever heard of.
I decided to checkout some of the recommendations on Amazon. I scroll to to the bottom, no Amazon link.
One poster mentioned loading up his kindle with the recommendations.
Cmon Wiz, could be missing out on some posible business over there.
I know its slow over there, but not that slow. Its actually been picking up lately. Trying to do my part :-)
An Amazon link might help you
Just seems strange dafabet haven't updated their advertisement logo/picture in over 18 months.
Sorry if this is in the wrong place I'm new.

LOL. Quite common in the mad world of internet advertising. A company I once worked for commissioned photos of all employees for a 'meet the team' web page. Problem was they had high staff turnover and never updated the page for 5 years. I think I'm still up there, from when I had hair $:o)Quote: LemonI have a nice flashy advertisement from dafabet on my screen that is bothering me because they are advertised by 3 football players on their advert. The foreground player in the middle is called Jermaine Defoe and he has played for Bournemouth AFC since the 1st of July 2017. The problem is he is wearing a Sunderland AFC shirt with the dafabet logo on the front. dafabet are no longer sponsors of Sunderland and obviously jermaine Defoe hasn't worn that shirt since June 2017.
