Hi everyone. I am very sorry to announce that I just made a really stupid mistake which wiped out everything that has been posted in the last 14 and a half hours, the time of the last backup that was done.
Unfortunately, it is what it is - everything that had been posted since then is gone. Please direct complaints towards me since it was 100% my fault.

I'm sympathetic to the challenges: sometimes, even though you may do all the right things and take all of the right precautions, bad things can happen...
Lack of prior planning on your part doesn't constitute an emergency on my part.

Since the buck stops with me, I also apologize for the inconvenience. Yes, PMs send in the last 14 hours are gone. Basically, we lost the whole site, and had to go to an automatic back up 14 hours old. I know hundreds of posts and messages were lost. If you wrote anything since about 2 AM Pacific time, consider it lost, and you will have to write to write it again, if you choose to.

I wrote the most interesting post ever in the history of this forum and it got wiped out before I was able to post it. Since I cannot recreate greatness, I am back to average posts.

Therein lies the mistake I made: I was accidentally connected to this site's database, thinking that I was connected to the new site's database. I wiped out all of the data like I have done several times today already, except the changes weren't showing up on the new site. Wizard called me seconds later to say that WoV was showing the new site's data, and I began panicking. All of the blame for the glitch lies with me, and all of the praise lies with our host for performing daily database backups.

Everything was rolled back to how it was around 1:00 AM Pacific time (about 16 hours, 42 minutes, and 24 seconds ago).
So, posts, private messages, blog posts, blog comments, blocked users, blocked threads, profile changes, new members, banned members, votes in polls, flagged posts, thread subscriptions, thread ratings -- all such changes were lost.

I once had a Unix admin fat-finger the -I and -O flags on a CPIO backup command, for a major school district, since the "I" and "O" keys are right next to each other. He did a -I, when he should have done a -O.

The biggest mistake I ever did was to change the permission bits globally. While I was logged in as root. Fortunately this was at 4:45 on a Friday. In an instant, my weekend plans changed.

It was worse... he was doing the MONTHLY backup and RESTORED the backup from 2 months ago over the current image :p
