Over the last so many years, I see more and more VP machines having a max bet that is greater than 5 coins (like 20 or 25). So, not only do I have to check the pay table on a machine but also the max bet. And, during play, making sure not to hit the maxbet button instead of the deal button is a must. I find it all a big nuisance. I don’t know how many times I realized I was playing way more per hand than I had planned because I accidentally hit the maxbet button.

Since I almost never look at the buttons I'm pressing and never use the touch screen, yeah, the max bet button is a bit too close to the deal/draw button if I'm not making max bet bets. I need to double check the denomination ($0.25, $0.50, $1, $2, $5, $10, $25, etc.) before my first bets too.
I first saw 20 coin VP machines last century, so this is not a new problem.

I wouldn't be surprised to see more classic VP games with some sort of bonus button for some sort of extra play. It's so common on all other games.
Mostly it's just been a whole variation of the game.

Does the 800 for 1 royal still kick in at 5 coins?
May the cards fall in your favor.

I think what you're complaining about is machines that allow you to change the denomination by increasing the number of coins bet. Am I correct?
Yes. These are confusing.

Yes, at least on all the machines I've seen with increased max bets.

I haven't noticed that, just more coins per bet. Denomination stays the same. Of course, effectively, one is betting as if it were a higher denomination if they hit the max bet button.

I have come across a few machines on Carnival cruise ships that require 10 coins to get the 800 for 1 royal.
They used to have a penny VP game at Tunica Roadhouse where you needed to bet 100 coins to get the 800 for 1 royal payout. It had 9/6 JoB and gave out 1 TC per $10. Roadhouse took them out about 4 years ago. Then, CET took out the Roadhouse entirely!

I played a VP game in Europe that required 40 coins per hand. Many years ago. Had to put every coin in.
But "back in the day" Vegas VP players could roll the 5 coins in one motion.

I can't speak for the particular machine(s) to which the OP referred, but not always. The single-line twenty coin max bet tend not to kick in at five credits, from what I have seen. I have seen some that have, but limited to my experiences only, 50%+ of the time they do not.
That said, I have not observed very many single-line machines with a twenty coin max bet; the ones I have were typically bartops.
