The question I'm considering here is about what your time is worth to you. Recently, I noticed a must-hit on the edge of being advantageous. I played some DW off of some free play while waiting as a line of ploppies rotated off the machine for about an hour. Returned after blackjack to see the meter had risen four dollars but was still being played. Casually made a few laps to make an occasional check-in and went to sleep. Next day watched for two more hours as someone played it at a rate of about $1.50 coin in a minute (sigh) and had security hold their seat three different times. How patient are you? When is enough enough?

Depends what else I am doing. If I am hanging at the casino anyways why not. If AP was my living and this was on my route I would spend a fair bit of time. I have other pursuits so no special trip.

Check back periodically or guess a specific time of day to check back. No way am I sitting around watching people play slots for more than three minutes, the misery of every minute doing that cuts off at least an hour or two off career due to faster burnout.

That's a fair point. It almost feels like a horror movie watching with the other players in a circle around the machine. Felt like they were closing in like zombies. Haha.

This kind of reminds me of a recent poker promotion to keep people in the room
Playing cash game at Derby Lane, no limit holdem
I get trips and win the hand
Dealer announces I get ticket, trips or higher qualify
Ticket goes in a drum for a 200.00 drawing every hour. Must be present to win
After the drawing, they don't empty the drum so tickets pile up
Guy next to me said he had 21 tickets in the drum so he cant leave
After playing another 30 min, I got up and left despite having a ticket in the drum
I was done playing and a tkt wont keep me in the room

Yeah, generally I don't stay for the length of those kind of promos, but I've known a person who was called three people after the "final" person since they weren't present. I know another person who was gone and missed out on $800. I'd rather not know I was called if I was absent.

"On the edge of being advantageous"

Whats it's worth even when you do happen to get on it?

I noticed there are some people who want to jump on stuff just because they know it's slightly advantageous. The play might only be worth $1 in total EV. I guess everyone has their own personal reasons for doing this. They might be board, they just want the gambling action, it might be fun, just so some other AP doesn't eventually get it, it might help deter competition, they want points on their card, just because, etc. I'm not immune to picking off something that really isn't worth that much, I have no clue why is, it's probably for various reasons at different times.

Its not about gaining the seat

He is waiting for the ploppies to rise the meter to a decently advantageous spot.

If its close that would take me a short time since I max bet and button-mash

Ploppies watch every excruciating spin reel one land then reel 2 land etc.

They sit and watch after a large win as the bells and music play while the big "YOU HAVE WON $××××× rises for 5 straight minutes

Meanwhile they are wagering.$.50 per spin.

You're right in that it wouldn't have been real lucrative, but it would have been justified in my opinion. Most conservative estimate would be that any money lost on the play would be made up for in free play, points and better offers (this particular casino is generous and I find that even one or two trips can make a significant mark on offers received) and a looser estimate would be it was worth $100 before those things. I'm sure I've waited for less trivial things in my life.

Are you telling me when you were less financially viable you wouldn't think about this? I'd like to hear your explanation, especially since there's a bit of condescension there. Between free play, offers, activity on the account that isn't restricted to BJ and a willingness to partake in plays of a smaller value since I'm not as well bankrolled as I've been previously (this is intentional I might add,) We could talk about the overhead of bus expenses and the folly of allowing five figures to be stolen from us too, but nobody is perfect.

I've been fortunate to not have to deal with tolls, my insurance is relatively cheap in that I pay six months at a time. You may have a point about the maintenance though, that does add up! Haha. I apologize for my snarkiness, but there are few things I dislike more than feeling oblivious to jokes made at my expense. I think I see your angle now and understand.

I would think if nothing else relying on public transportation could put a wrench in your plans when it comes to some promos and overall convenience, but I'm not as familiar with it as you, so there's that.

There is a lot to be said for a blackjack player who is feeling some heat or worried about heat to have some slot play on their account. It is one of the ways to buy a little bit more longevity. Having that be on a +EV play makes it even more appealing.

Good point. IMO “a little bit” is a key word there since slots and tables are run like two separate casinos most places. More than that though, at some places, it can turn what would otherwise would be a trespass into a simple backoff. I’ve seen a dealer corrected in front of me, and hearing the boss say to pc something like “he’s a big slot player” at a place associates were trespassed when returning after a play.

OTOH, playing the tables rated can potentially toast a card you’re getting value from machines on where the cash value of your table comps is next to zero, or trash your ADT if not also playing close to normal slot play that day.

If I am running down a possible advantage player, one of the first things I will do is look up their previous play. A significant amount of slot play (or play on other games) may even have me stop my assessment before it begins.

My various hosts have consistently told me over the years that if I want to increase my value to the property, I need to play more slots by percentage. I've very seldom.been unhappy with my comps, so I don't worry about it much, but I have tried to add a greater percentage of play on them. I just don't enjoy them very much compared to playing cards.

The annoying part has been, I find a slot that plays well and I think is fun. They remove it. I guess a lot of the ones I like pay too well or something, because they keep crappy ones from the same period.

For example Winning Bid , WhoDunnit, and Jackpot.Party all came out in about the same year (all Williams titles). Jackpot Party was the not-fun one with an annoying, constant noisemaker and a crappy bonus game. The other two were really fun to play, and your money lasted a long time (or you won). Guess which of those 3 is still in casinos? The 2 good ones disappeared years ago.

Lol, I have done significant traveling like that before.

If I had a car it would read,

Drive car to airport (pay for gas tolls and parking) then take plane ro MSP (wtf is that? Mississippi?) Then rent a car (more expenses for rental car fee gas and tolls) to mall of America (they have a comic book store I might enjoy) then drive to the casino (gas and tolls)

When I moved to Jackson Heights in 1992, I had two cars and pretty much had owned one constantly since 1976. Within a few months, my cars had received a dozen tickets and been towed twice. I decided it was easier to sell the cars and use the money for taxis and rentals. End result was I saved a lot of money, and walked quite a bit. When I moved back to the Island, I needed a.car. The closest bus was a mile away and didn't go anywhere worth going to.
NYC is becoming less and less car friendly. Thousands of parking spaces have been lost to bike racks. Somehow, somewhere, someone decided adding tens of thousands of bicycles to the congestion of Manhattan was a good idea.
As far as not renting cars on out of town trips, that part I don't understand.

It is often a balance between time and frustration when traveling. Now, of course things are different but in my 'salad days' I used to hitchhike from airports, it could take a few days before you got a ride but a pilot's lounge was a free motel room and no one much cared. Boston to Columbine, CO cost me fifty dollars but most flights were free.

I think the best way to travel is still to bum your way aboard boats. Usually you pay fifteen or twenty dollars a day for your first two voyages, after that they pay you.

Unfortunately hitchhiking on roads can be dangerous in the USA.

If I were to fly to Vegas, I would want no plane transfers, no major deviations from a direct path to Vegas. Its mainly because flying is such an ordeal now.

Thats not spin my friend

Thats truth.

Until you can drive from NYC to Atlantic City ROUNDTRIP for $40 ($20 each way) including gas tolls and parking, and factoring in average upkeep of a car and insurance

You are basically free to spend lots more than me on the same travels

Are you "free" to make driving decisions. You want to stop for a quickie mart on the way? Sure.

But you ARE paying for that freedom.

And when either of us are stuck on the road...

I am in an uber in as fast as it takes for one to arrive while you are stuck waiting for your tow truck or under the chassis doing side road repairs

And finally when you guys arrive after a 2 hour drive exhausted I am well rested from my 2 hour nap ready to AP the crap outta the casinos
