Just a matter of curiosity but im wondering if we compare variance in poker and video poker what does it look like?
Lets say comparing highest possible variance in poker which is large field tournaments with "lowest" vp variance of jacks or better 96.
Which is more volatile and by how much? I got experience with poker but with vp very little.
Also standard deviation for jacks or better 96 being 4 (4.xx) is calculable but for poker it depends on your playstyle and other things .

Why not compare variance in poker to being eaten by an eagle?

lol. "ur dumb sabre" is low-hanging fruit, unfortunately, on the insult list.

I don't think you can really calculate variance in real live poker with unknown parties. You'll have guys that try to buy the pot with garbage and try to buy it with pocket Aces, and you'll have people who will be low key with garbage and pocket kings. You just don't know until you play with them and read them correctly, if you can.
I am thinking a very good poker player will do better than a very good video poker player - but a bad poker player will do a lot worse than a bad video poker player. (unless he can't lose anymore than his/her buy-in, thus his/her losses and his/her winnings are limited, whereas, in VP, they are only limited by the ability to get more money from the ATM or Casino Cashier.

I definitely agree with this statement, though I do think it's a little bit apples vs oranges.Quote: ukaserex...I am thinking a very good poker player will do better than a very good video poker player - but a bad poker player will do a lot worse than a bad video poker player...
A bad video poker player loses another couple percent as opposed to a good poker player.
A bad poker player will lose 80%+ more. Good players will catch these bad players in super bad spots and exploit them being bad by getting more money in the pot at these times. Thus, a bad poker player loses TONS MORE percent from the game than a bad video poker player does.
Playing it correctly means you've already won.
