Last year (2011) I hit 3-4 royals, almost all on single line play. This year, 2012, I switched to playing multiple line play, usually 5 play or 10 play, zero royals for the year. Also, I saw a dramatic reduction in four of a kinds as well. I would say I played roughly the same amount of money through the machine in both years, if not more in 2012. For example, a couple weeks ago I went to Laughlin, and played triple and five play. I hit one four of a kind for the entire weekend.
Is this just bad luck or should you see a difference in your results?

Well with multi-line play, your results will be more clumped. If you get a dealt quad, with 3 or 5-play, bam, you just got 3 or 5 of them. Technically I have 8 lifetime royal because I got dealt one on a multi-line game. If you played the same number of total hands, you're expectation of hand types will be the same, but you have a lot more variance in your results.
I dunno how many hands you have been playing, but if I had to take a rough guess, you hit more royals than expected in 2011 and less than expected in 2012. As for the Laughlin trip, that was obviously bad luck. It does happen though. :(
