A friend is planning a trip downtown where he can feel like a VIP for his b'day and asked my opinion about the downtown rooms that would fit the bill since I don't stay on the strip anymore. I couldn't help him with the rooms he asked about (I stay in the Junior Corner suite at the GN) so thoughts would be welcome.

Choice #1. The Penthouse at the GG

Choice #2. The Spa suite at the GN

Choice #3. The D suite at the D.

Any thoughts and/or reviews would be welcome.

P.S. I googled high roller downtown with him but all we got were tons of links about that stupid Ferris wheel at the Linq. I found that amusing.

I booked a room at the Cal for next week. I can let you know how nice it is after that... But I did not book a VIP suite.

The only place I've stayed downtown before was Binions when that was still open and it was not nice. Kinda a moot point since their hotel is closed now.

Not even one opinion ?

Don’t you think it’s a tad presumptuous to ask a question late in the evening, and then be upset by no replies the following morning?

That said, I am a low roller that stays at low budget places. The cheapest room I ever stayed at was at Golden Gate. I will never stay there again. Take that for what it’s worth.

I stay at the Golden Gate (lowest is $42-44/weekday) & El Cortez (lowest $46/weekday) when I don't have free rooms and no Westgate Resorts specials ($52/night) are available. Trivago is what I use these days. Too lazy to do Priceline/Hotwire & eBates these days.

Golden Gate rooms are small (like a 5* hotel in Venice where I stayed).
If you like "big", it's not the place to go. I've done enough comped Presidential suites and big rooms (with dining table for 12, and sofas for 20...).

I bring my own sheets (600 count) & pillow (buckwheat).

What I don't like about Golden Gate is the lack of covered parking (In the summer, I don't like to park outside in 126 degree heat).
Golden Nugget parking (next door) is free if you have a non-basic card (but it needs 4,000 pts - 20,000 coin-in every month, a pain).

What I want in a cheap room is
(1) clean - no mold, bed bugs, etc...
(2) safe
(3) decent bed

Helpful
(4) TV with good channels (Doesn't have to have 100+ channels, just 4-5 good ones).
(5) fridge
(6) coffeemaker to make hot water for tea or instant noodles or soup
(7) stove

----
There are some cheap places in Vegas that I stay away from...
They are either (1) not clean (2) not safe.

----
P.S. To answer the OP's question, I have not stayed in any "fancy" rooms downtown...so have nothing to recommend.

Like the Golden Gate the Tropicana has an uncovered lot. The Tropicana is free but the Vegas summers WILL burn the clear coat on your car.

If I was a super hero my special power would be to instantly find the perfect combo of hot to cold water in new showers. I'm usually pretty good at it with the exception of the Golden Gate. Those things are either freezing cold or burning the skin right off.

Where have you gotten a room with a stove?

When it comes to fancy rooms downtown, does anyone rival the Golden Nugget? I've only seen the suites at DT Grand, Golden Gate at GN so I can't comment on the D. If you like standing around waiting for elevators, the D and Circus Circus are where you wanna be 👍

Spa Suite ....
I've not been to any of the listed suites but a spa suite will atleast provide him with in room luxuries that if his drinking and gambling activities don't provide any impressive memories a Jacuzzi surely will.

I think the one bedroom spa suites at Golden Nugget are fantastic and the best downtown. They are two story with living room, dining room, full bar, and bathroom downstairs. The spiral staircase takes you up to the bedroom that has a steam shower and a Jacuzzi that looks out the window. When you order room service they can deliver it either upstairs or downstais as there is an entry on each level.

I have probably spent close to 50 days in these rooms. Their website used to have a bug in it where you could book this room for the price of the lowest room on the website. It was very nice to get a two story suite for $49 a night.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

Thanks for the help. I think there's still a bug in their website because you can't do anythinng with them (at least I can't) on an Apple device.

If staying at the Tropicana, park in the Hooters lot. (free)

Extended Stay America (2*) has stoves & full-size refrigerators. They are unusually pricey in Vegas ($80-100+). I've stayed in some elsewhere for $26-30/night on Priceline ($42-44 after tax & fees).
Timeshares (4*) - I've only previewed them. Never stayed in one.
"Weeklies" (often 1-1.5* rooms) - Ditto. Only looked at them. I booked one (a decent 1.5* one was $259/week + tax = $1,400/month), but ended up doing a regular rental (cheaper, Studios in Summerlin for $500/month).

Hostels. One in Vegas even has a swimming pool & jacuzzi.
My brother likes to cook, so he used hostels for the kitchens...until someone stole some of his food. Now he uses Air BnB.

Some rooms come with microwaves.

Thanks for the great tip! Wish I had known this in Nov & Dec... I paid around $800/month for rooms, since I only had about half of my rooms comped.

I stayed at 4 Queens, had a high floor "suite", though it was 1 room, and liked it very much. Not noisy. Leather couch, big screen tv, wet bar with 4 chairs, microwave, large apartment fridge, walk-in shower (no tub) with very nice amenities (full size soaps, sewing kit, toothbrush, etc etc) in a decent bathroom, decent king bed with good linens.

I would recommend it. Not a 2 story high-roller suite etc, but nicer than I expected and very comfy.

Free covered parking for guests, several good to fair restaurants on-site, OK games, center of FSE.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.
