What's really incredible is in Maryland UMBC (university of maryland baltimore county) is the poor sister to U. of Maryland at College Park which has a great basketball history.

The Washington Post which follows U. of MD College Park very closely will go for years without mentioning UMBC.

UMBC has only 14,000 students. U. of MD College Park has 39,000 students.

It was the first time a no. 16 seed beat a no. 1 seed since Division 1 teams expanded to 64 teams in 1985 - that's 33 years and there were 136 matchups of 16 vs. 1 since then

before yesterday they had never beaten an ACC team. This year they lost to Army, Stoney Brook and Albany.

What a story.

Not a wonderful story if you bet -600 or so on Virginia making the sweet 16.

If...
Its - Possessive; It's - "It is" / "It has"; There - Location; Their - Possessive; They're - "They are"

That's what happens when you aren't tested during the regular season. Virginia looked like chickens with their heads cut off in those final 10 minutes. 4-22 from the 3 when they're shooting 38% on the season (8.3).

You evidently didn't watch the Louisville game. Down four, without the ball with under a second left, after needing a miracle just to get to overtime when down ten late in the game.

Seems like 20 to 1 odds for a 16 seed to beat a #1 seed is low, especially given that no such team had won in 135 games over 34 years and also that Virginia was considered the #1 overall team.

Is that an effect of the sportsbooks being skittish after the 250 to 1 future odds were given to the Kurt Warner-led Rams to win the Super Bowl–that even the insane longshots can win?

I would think it would be a function of the fact that a single basketball game has some variance to it.

I guess you could also look at 20 to 1 odds as: if those two teams played 21 times, the underdog could win at least once.
