My son and I a few years ago used to have a habit of driving up to LV to play craps on Wednesday nights and then drive back to be at work Thursday morning. It was a "dad and son night out."
We had a limited budget but enough to play for a couple hours. Tables were $10 then.
One night Jason lost $497 of his $500. It was 2am and time to drive back to LA. He went to the cage and there was a line because there was only one cashier.
So he turns around and there was a $1 slot machine. The old reel type, single line.
He drops in the three one dollar coins (this is the old days when there were real coins, not plastic chips) and he hits for $1500.
Gets the hand pay and we drive home. End of story.
Mine is pretty memorable for us. We go to the casino with $500. Well actually 520 because it was tradition to always play a certain game on the way out the door. We did the same thing every time. Take 500, we each play 150 on BJ and the other 200 was for a few hours of penny and nickle slots. Well on this night we blow through our $500 in less than 2 hours. We could not win on anything. On the way out we played my favorite slot at the time which was a 5 reel cleaopatra that when you get the bonus symbol it makes a noise and the picture lights up. It's not a video slot, it was an actual 5 reel slot. Anyways, I put my $20 in and hit max bet by accident. Can't remember the amount but it was a lot, maybe $11.50?
As luck would have it we end up with multiple bonus symbols and win close to $500. Of course we should have left but we stayed and played. Played another 5 or 6 hours and left with $600. Only up $100 but after being down $500 it was a great night.
I had a car - but no place to live. Gambling was not how I got in that situation, but it certainly didn't help - not in the short run.
In the long run, using a credit card for a cash advance, I had played a bit at various casinos before my lease ran out. I got comps for 2 free days at Imperial Palace, pretty much every week. Likewise with the Palace Casino Resort. 1 Day at Treasure Bay, and 2 days at Beau Rivage.
7 days a week. I liked black jack and video poker, so I figured if I maintained my levels of gaming, I could eat free and sleep free with no utlities. The only real hitch was gas and insurance for the car. At 35, I wasn't at all concerned about health insurance, but if pressed, the university I was taking classes for my masters would have taken care of me.
I knew nickel slots would be just a bit of luck - so I went to nickel video poker, figuring I might have a chance to win a little bit, maybe another 50 cents or so.
I got my 1.34 up to 1.84 and said to heck with it and went to the bar for a beer, figuring I'd play 1 quarter at a time, really slowly as I watched the tv.
Once I had 2.50 built up, I went for max play and hit the progressive for 1000 and change. Been a while, it might have been 1026, but not much over a grand.
Then Katrina screwed up my rent free living plan. After that - I stopped gambling until about 4 months ago.
I won't do the rent free living plan again. I am currently using a $400 limit for each gaming session - but with the free play being so generous lately, I don't even take more than 20 bucks. I'm sure once winter is over, they'll drop that $100 a week free play, $60 per week free play from Palace Casino and Boomtown respectively - but in the meantime, I'll take whatever the machines give me and play with the rest, or just grab a buffet and head home, depending on how the mood strikes.
Quote: DieterFree play is not money. It's EV. There is a difference.
It may not be cash, but it definitely is a liquid asset.
More importantly, anytime someone counts points on their players card and match play coupons as part of their net worth it makes for a better story

You have to yell "Come on, Boing Boings!" or the sphinxes don't appear with the usual frequency.
Nickels, quarters? 9 line, or was there a 15 or 20 line option? 5 coin per line max? ($11.25 max sounds like 9 line 5 coin quarters.)
There are a handful of older IGT video slots (Kenny Rogers, Phone Tag, Lobstermania, Turkey Shoot...) at my local place, 15 line 20 coin max, multi-denom. On 25c denom, that's $75 a spin max. I haven't quite been that brave yet.
Quote: GWAEWhether it is a troll or not I actually think it is a good topic. I bet all of us non APs have a story or 2 about being almost broke and getting a nice win.
What about us Machine AP's who were ankles deep in a machine before having our asses saved?
My absolute biggest save of my life came on a WMS progressive, pay by $2,500 nickel Robin Hood game. I was $2,200 into the machine and 1,000+ Spins since last bonus, following three goose eggs (bonuses that pay nothing in their free games) that followed a simple $2.75 hit. Hit the bonus finally, 2 spins in hit Arrow, Arrow, Golden Arrow, Arrow, Arrow for like $3,825 dollars or something ridiculous like that. I had $200 left in my pocket before I was capped out for the day on my withdrawals. After taking that hand pay, the progressive bumped all the way up to $2,497.xx, and about 30 minutes later, I had another hand pay for $2,499.xx from the progressive. Totally saved my ass on that one with that bonus, it was just awful, calculated at 38% payback prior to that bonus hitting finally.
That was the last time I tried to solo one of those without having a "scout" cap it for me prior to me leaving the bank with a nasty withdrawal lol.

Here is the machine. It was 9 line nickles. Max bet is only $4 I think so that was off. Either way I would never play max.
Quote: KentryUpdate. Went to the bank, got the money. Went to the Casino and cashed out $14 voucher. Used most of it. Free play that was $5 only amounted to $1.44 in real money. I played almost all of the bank money too. Now just barely have enough to get a haircut. Left Casino feeling disgusted in myself. Seriously facing not having my phone bill paid now until next paycheck. Going to refund one of the pairs of shoes I bought yesterday for money so I can eat for a few days. Thinking of begging Mom for phone bill money, really don't like asking Mom for money.
I would have kicked my son's ass if he ever gambled away his phone bill money and then had the nerve to beg me for phone bill money. You don't deserve for her to lend you any money. You had the money and then willingly chose to gamble it away.
Also, this is a really good topic, but you didn't have to tell us how much money is in your bank account. At least you eventually acknowledged that you shouldn't have told us that. You could have just said, "I had $85, lost about $50, and got a huge hit worth about $50 on All That Glitters, saving my ass.
About slots that have saved my ass, I had a $20, was down to my last $5, when a Cleopatra machine on a 20 cent spin gave me $40. I was happy I doubled my money with that one spin and was wise enough to stop playing.
Must be interesting, living on the edge like that.

Yeah, using your free play money because you absolutely need to because it is your only source of immediate asset is actually reasonable. Using your free play because you were a jerk who gambled your phone bill money away is stupid.

I was living in Pittsburgh, doing odd jobs and working part time to keep everything together. It was enough to get by, but not enough if anything happened. And then, my sole transportation, a 1976 Suzuki 500 that I rode 24/7/365, broke a tooth off a gear in the transmission, and I was screwed. After fixing the bike I had $3. And the rent was due, and there was no food in the refrigerator. It was an emergency.
So, since it was an emergency, I went over to the drugstore and put all $3 on the daily number for 911. And it hit. I collected $1500 (the daily number in PA paid 500 for 1 in those days), and I never looked back. Within a week I got a real job, then a couple months later I got a decent car, then sold the bike. Those were my very first steps of actually building a life instead of drifting through the world.

But there was one time, back when Mrs and I started playing, that we went down to AC for a couple days. This was when we were slot players only, and I took probably $300, and she took $200, for two days.
We got down there at about 10AM, at Resorts, and we just got completely hammered by everything we touched, like not even a cherry. By 11:30, all the money we had was $100. We'd already paid for the room (we were so new we didn't even get comps then), and we were basically looking at walking the boardwalk for the next day and a half.
So I went over to the $1 Wheel of Fortune, and on my first spin got a SPIN, and hit the red and white $1000. I gave Mrs $200 to get her even, and we went home the next evening with about $600 between us.

I have 2 phobias. Not sure if they have a name but they are my phobias. 1 is running out of gas and the other is dropping my car keys down a sewer. I won't even walk near one in a parking lot. In order to avoid the first one I have $20 hidden in my car for emergencies like the forgetting wallet one.
Then again, the comment about the haircut pegged the meter.

The ridiculous things about Kentry is him claiming he gambles away his haircut money and his phone bill money, and telling complete anonymous strangers on here how much money he had in his bank. He at least later on mentioned that he shouldn't have told us how much money was in his bank account.
Quote: DeanThis seeems interesting. What was AP haircutting?
It's not really AP hair-cutting, TeddyS is just making a joke.
Basically, there's a Great Clips around my area in which, every odd-numbered time you get a haircut, the bottom of the receipt makes your next haircut $4.99. I keep these receipts in my wallet until the next time I get a haircut. Anyway, a haircut would normally be $14, but for the last several months, the coupon on the backside of any Kroger's receipt has a haircut for $8.99 at Great Clips, which does not affect the $4.99 offer as long as your previous haircut did not have $4.99 on the receipt.
As a result, a haircut that would normally cost $14 now costs an alternating $4.99 and $8.99.
In addition to that, I also get a haircut with no clipper guard on the sides and back and a 1 Guard (1/8th inch) on top so that it takes longer before I need a haircut again, so that saves money.
No matter what the price of the haircut is, though, I always pay with a $20 and tell the girl to keep the change. Thus, the only thing that these coupons make a difference on is the tip. If I had to pay $14, then I would end up tipping $6.00. As it stands, I tip $15.01 and $11.01, alternately. Although, sometimes it's an $11.01 tip even with the $4.99 receipt because I'll occasionally get the $4 goatee trim.
I should also mention that I don't always let the person keep all the change if she seems snooty about me using the coupon or gives me a look, in that event, I only tip $5.

If someone is betting mom's haircut money then he isn't going to listen to anyone here. In most cases it would cost more than the haircut money to get to the casino, though. It wouldn't be worth the $10 left over to go, that would only last a minute and then you gotta get home.
