Many of the video slot machines have bonus rounds that are free spins. Some of the newer machines, such as the WMS G+ series (Zeus II, Hearts of Venice, etc.) use special "bonus reels" for these free spins, where there are stacked wild cards in addition to the regular symbols.
How does the machine determine how much will be won during a bonus round? Does the RNG pick all the results for the combined spins as soon as you start the bonus round (sometimes the player must touch the screen to start it) and say, "We're going to give you $100 this time" or "You'll only get $2.50 this time", or does it work on each individual spin as it happens, just as if it were a regular spin?

In most jurisdictions, the amount won is not pre-determined. It simply spins the reels as though it were a regular game. If a game uses different reel strips in the bonus, they are required to tell the player in a help screen. Often, when playing the bonus, you'll see a message like "Bonus Reels In Use."
In a few jurisdictions, including Washington, the total win is pre-determined and it is up to the machine to display a win for that amount.
