Being primarily a poker player, I'm mostly averse to gambles I know I can't win. However, sometimes I take a casino bus, which comes with a voucher, or get comped a voucher, and I was wondering what the best way was to cut down on the variance as much as possible, without sacrificing too much in the way of EV or time commitment. Typically I'll use a 25¢ blackjack machine - the rules are terrible (no surrender, double 10-11 only, natural pays 1:1, split aces resolve immediately, split to 3, not sure about doubling after split), but decent for a slot machine, and a payout on almost half my "spins" seems to suit my purposes. I know, as the Wizard says answering a similar question, video poker offers a better yield on paper (although this is at a casino with lousy pay tables, so I'm not sure it's that much anyway), but it also has large jackpots, so my guess would be that the typical-case edge is steeper. So given my stated goals - tight spread, not too much time investment, not too bad an edge - does anyone know of a better way?
The trick to poker is learning not to beat yourself up for your mistakes too much, and certainly not too little, but just the right amount.

The VBJ game is pretty good. You'll get back about 95% of money wagered.

I usually spend free play on Bonus Poker, if 2 pairs pay 2-1. Otherwise, JoB.

Best results (my experience) you get in video poker. I think that payout tables do matter, especially with your goal, because with the couple of hands you play you are likely to be paid some of the "lower" wins, and then of course it makes a difference if you get 3 or 4 paid.
But even with bad payout tables I would go with video poker.
