Will you call Texas Holdem 100% skill game? Or rather skill game with chance factor? If yes, how big this chance factor could be in your opinion? What is your definition of this game?

It's both.

But the percent that it's skill vs luck changes depending on the player's experience. Novice players rely more on luck, and think that the more experienced players are simply luckier than they are.

Some players will say it's all skill - until you're all-in with a caller and some more cards to come. At that point, it's all luck - be it luck that the underdog hit his miracle card, or luck that the better hand will hold up.

Maybe you could argue that over the long term your poker results depend more and more on skill. That is, while a good player can run bad for a long time and lose a lot of money, over time the more +EV plays you make, the more you stand to win.

In the short - medium term, luck is a big factor that cannot be ignored in poker. You need a decent bankroll to fund a poker 'career'.

I think Texas Hold'em has a lot of similarites to Backgammon in its mix of skill and luck. Only, Backgammon has much less variance.

On the subject of poker, IGT and G2 are introducing "Texas Hold'em Heads Up Poker" -- it is a head's up poker game vs. a computer opponent in a Video Poker / Slot type box. The programmer is Fredrich Dahl and the owner is Gregg Giuffria (-- hence G2 -- google Mr. Giuffria, he's quite a character). I wonder how long this will last once it gets deployed in March.

I usually say it's 2/3 skill and 1/3 luck.

Like any game with cards or dice, and decision making, it is a combination. Short term results are mostly based on luck, long term results are mostly based on skill.

There was a glitch in this game that got exploited until it was fixed. If you were in the big blind and bet out on the river the computer opponent would automatically fold if your stack was less than ten dollars. From the big blind you called your computer opponent's preflop raise, then called his bet on the flop, then called his turn bet. Then you bet out on the river leaving your stack under ten dollars. The computer opponent would automatically fold.
