Hi,

The joker (bug) appears ambiguous to me in the following case, If I have the following cards:

KH QH JS 10S 9S 7S and a joker

I already have a straight, but I can make a straight flush if I make the joker a 6S. Is this allowed, or am i forced to use it as an Ace since I already have a straight?

Thank you
-Sam

In the 5-card hand the joker works with the other four cards and is either an Ace or any card that completes a flush/str/st fl. In the 2-card hand it is an Ace. So in your case you could make StrFlush with KhQh or Straight (K-9) and A7.

(I'm not sure of the rules if you use it to complete a flush e.g. As Js 9s 7s Joker whether it is an Ace or King of Spades, but that's not your question. However with JsTs9s7s you can use the Joker as 8s.)

Personally (and the calculator confirms my feelings - https://wizardofodds.com/games/pai-gow-poker/calculator/ ) you should make SF and KQ.

Confirms? I think you're reading the calculator incorrectly.

When the dealer is banker, (which is probably what the OP is playing), the straight / A7 is worth 47.5% while the straight flush / KQ is worth 43.9%.

When the player is banker, the straight / A7 is worth 49.4% while the straight flush / KQ is worth 48.5%. OK. Here you're right, but it's also a lot closer.

Hi,

Thanks, I didn't realize the results would be different for the player vs dealer. That calculator does indeed show what you're saying.

Player, the joker is used to make a straight flush.
Dealer, the joker is used in the low cards.

Interesting.

Thank you

Correct. But Finsrule above is also correct. The house in all the houses I’ve played will play a straight with an ace up rather than a flush or even a straight flush with a king up. If I am banking as an example, I would definitely play the straight flush with a KQ as opposed to the straight with an A-7. Winning on the KQ versus KQ makes it the play.

It is just another example of ‘house ways’ not being best ways.

If I’m the house and have 33322AK, play the full house without blinking an eye.

And to answer Charlie's statement of uncertainty, in PGP when using the Joker to make a 5-card flush, the Joker plays as the highest rank of that suit that is not already in your hand*, usually the Ace..

*Given that the Joker cannot complete a SF in the hand.

I think you meant:
Unless the Joker completes a SF in the hand.

Yeah, I know. Semantics.
