I'm also hoping it will motivate boring people to pre-filter themselves, sort of like Finkel's famous date:

Maybe I'm not in tune with young women today, but why is there a big thing about wanting to be "cool" or "socially hip"? Is it worth not having a personality of your own to be "cool"? It's weird that poker players don't have a stigmata of being a nerd, but the best ones are great at math and use their analytical side of their brains more then the creative. I never understood why it's a turn-off to have a passion or a hobby you care deeply about. Not everyone likes to read celebrity gossip and work on their tans.

PS. I have nerd rage :(

+1, especially about the women. What the hell? Who would want to marry that?

I doubt you could ever say that without sounding stupid. Life is not like, the big bang theory, no Kaley Cuoco for you.You will be stuck with Louie Anderson.

You can play poker and be an AP without being a nerd, If not fake it. You can be different, cool and interesting all at the same time, even while liking all the same things you normal like. Just be a closet nerd, while around attractive girls.

Don't listen to Beach on this one. I don't think she understands you're young and you probably want some action. Your collection of magic cards probably won't do it. Girls that like that stuff don't themselves like guys who do. Don't be yourself, if you want to get laid. Since you think girls are minus EV, who care if she dose not like you, for you? That's what buddy's and Friends are for.

Axel, can I ask how old you are?

I would have agreed with you when I was in my early-mid 20's. But, some time around my late 20's or early 30's (probably closer to early 30's) things changed. At some point around there, it becomes more important to be successful than to be "cool". Or maybe what is "cool" changes. In any case, I'm a geek (a math geek, at that). I don't hide it. I love video games (geeky RPGs, not "cool" games like COD and Madden). I also love board games (geeky strategy ones) and puzzles. Again, I don't hide any of this.

On the other hand, as a result of being a geek, I make really good money (let's just say that I'm in "the 1%" and leave it at that). I'm also not douchey about it. I don't flash my money around or try to impress people, but I'm not cheap either. I will take a girl to a nice restaurant and spend a few hundred dollars on dinner (the fact that I like good food helps, here... I'm enjoying it as much as she is). I'm honest, polite, and I treat people well. I have no trouble getting women. In fact it is just the opposite -- I meet so many attractive women and like so many of them that it's hard to decide when to "take the plunge" and get into a real relationship because I don't want to shut the other ones out.

The bottom line is, if you just want to get laid and never see the woman again, fine, show her what she wants to see and put on whatever act you want, if you think it's necessary. But if you're actually looking for a relationship (even a short-term one), drop the act. Pretending to be someone that you're not is a lot of work, and honestly is not worth it.

Alternative: if you have money, and you just want to get laid, just get a hooker. It's easier than putting on an act, no more expensive than buying dinner and drinks, and it will work every time. There are some people who find it immoral but I don't get that -- if you care about morality, it certainly seems more moral than pretending to be someone you're not, and pretending that you like someone, just to get laid. At least with the hooker everyone is being honest and getting exactly what they want out of the deal.

Axel's probably right, depending on what you want from a girl/woman. I don't do ditzy. But a lot of men like to...(pun intended).

That reminds me of 40 Year Old Virgin where the guy sells his toy collection and it ends up being worth $100s of thousands. I haven't sold all my cards yet but if I can get around to finding them at my mom's house I'm sure I'll be quite rich, or end up with a bunch of windshield wiper fluff. There was a magazine I used to buy called "Scrye" or "Scryed" I can't remember but it listed all the retail prices of rare cards, and the problem was the stores don't give you much, and it's hard to sell on craigslist or something like that because each card is used for different purposes for players.

I should have been playing for ante but I wasn't really good at it, but that's where the money is in taking expensive cards from other players.

Precisely. I did not quite understand any of that Gizmodo Dating stuff but perhaps "techie" is too broad a term now and encompasses too much without further subdivisions.

Unusual interests and accomplishments define character. Anyone can read the national enquirer and do their nails. Its pretty shallow to think about such things and even more shallow to talk about it. Its much better to have real interests and do things such as join a gun club or take judo lessons or play Go or restore motorcycles. I have no desire to travel by freight train but its an increasingly popular hobby these days. I don't know if I'd like to meet a boxer or not, but its an increasingly popular activity for young women these days with bars and gyms offering boxing. I remember one Golden Gloves champion who was also a gambler. Three days after being knocked out in Madison Square Garden some guy came up to her and said "just give me the guy's address and I'll take care of him for you". She didn't bother to explain the situation, she just took his phone number and kept it in case of later need. Got to admire a woman with a quirky personality like that!

There is enough "oatmeal" and "jello" out there that someone who has real depth to their character is valued for it. Buy an old boat and sail to the tropics? Hitchhike across the nation? Visit dozens of communes? Study microbial geology? Work on an organic farm in New Zealand? Drive a camper van around Europe and then import it as a used vehicle? Brew your own beer, ale and wine? All these things will separate you from the crowd of bland trend-following types who overdose on nail polish fumes.

I spent quite some time trying to track a murder suspect through the developing world of Role Playing Games as they morphed into massively multiple networked games. It was a strange world and I didn't care for it, but I don't regret the time I devoted to the investigation. Tracking down archived chat sessions was a real challenge as was piercing the chat room veil to learn real identities. I've never met a more dedicated homicide team than two grand-motherly Church Ladies who made a perfect team following a suspected pervert to get his dna at the local mall.

So this video about some techie and some nerdy guy may be a bit strange but I suspect that those with depth to their character are usually the ones with much better character. She didn't care for his hobby... okay: shake hands with him and say goodnight, but don't blab him all over the internet as a weirdo.

I think you may have missed the fact I was telling Dj all of this. He is young, so my age is not important in this matter. Also I have a, 10 year younger beautiful girl friend, I have always dated out of my league. I'm well rounded I like everything from chess to beer pong. I just wouldn't lead with a chess conversation, when talking to some girl.

Dj has stated, he was not looking for a relationship and girls were -EV for many reasons. You don't have to put on a act, but you shouldn't be disclosing things like,"My mommy still picks out and buys me my clothing cheap", Even if his mom dose, and he said, she does.

Hookers? Bad advice, There is many reasons one should pass. There's something to be said for the thrill of the hunt and possible ego booster a man gets from getting a girl without having to pay for it. I rarely hear any of my buddy's say, WOW, I scored with this hooker last night, her hair was blond, here eyes were green(or was that the money in her eyes) and that cold sore was hot.

I don't really think, in Dj's heart, he thinks girls are complete -EV(we all know they have some drawbacks). Perhaps its just a way he just has given up on trying, due to the difficultly a self appointed nerd faces.

I wonder if you're not interpreting Dj's comments correctly because you don't really share his motivations? Personally, without wanting to put words in his mouth, I second "girls are -EV", but I do so wanting to get my life somewhat in order so I can date with an eye toward's the future. This has taken a lot longer than I expected and I may have taken a different course if I'd known, but "thrill of the hunt" has never been motivation for me.
