It would sound better in person, from me anyways. So, ill try to make it short. A group of us were discussing a play at the plaza, DJ was half listening as usual, I think he has Gambling A.D.D or something, he cant seem to sit still, great kid even a "NICE GUY" I think he only caught part of the conversation and heard key words. I'm sure he was dreaming of $5 Royals

Because this promo was at the plaza and Louie has a show there, It brought up a discussion between me and a few others. I told them some stories about Louie. The stories dealt with Louie liking legal teen guys.

We made a deal with DJ for him to play the promotion. A few days later DJ shows up for what should have been a long session and starts playing.

Not sure exactly how it went down. But I few hrs later, I get word that Dj was no longer playing. I think he texted me some creepy guy was staring at him and his leg or something. At this point I think Dj started to remember, bits and pieces of the Louie story. Eventually Dj was so unsettled, he ran out the door. I meet up with Dj and he said the guy looked a bit like Louie but was unsure. Louie had a baseball cap on and was not as large as he appears on TV, and he really didn't look like what you would imagine. I went over to the Plaza to play VP with my GF and sure enough, it was Louie Anderson. After that Dj would sneak around and make sure Louie was not around before he started playing.

That's hilarious! I have some asian friends too, and one of them mentioned that there are lots of older gay white guys who have some sort of fetish for young asian dudes. He unfortunately found this out while he was staying in SF for work one time, and I guess a ton of older gay white guys kept hitting on him constantly. I was ROTFLMAO, and I still give him crap about it. :D

I've always cracked up at Louie Anderson's humor over the years, but whenever I see him now, I'm always going to think of the DJ incident. Poor DJ.

LOL!!

Axels right about the story unfortunately.....

I was wearing workout clothes because the plaza has a gym and I use it sometimes. That day I decided to work out then play since I woke up early. When I was playing Louie sat right next to me and I could catch him staring at me and made me extremely uncomfortable. Why couldn't it have been an older cougar I don't know....

I learned the hand order in my 30s (while learning to play VP) and I knew the basics enough to enjoy the occasional episode of the WSOP on TV. I've recently begun seriously studying Texas Hold 'em (and I know I have a copy of "The Theory of Poker" in my apartment...somewhere) but haven't made it to a live table for real money quite yet. Never Admit that, again. Pretend it was just like that one drunken night, you had with your best friend.

I still play..been going on for 5+ years now

I did start playing poker in middle school..used to have a math teacher who liked to use poker as an example all the time. Played a lot in high school. $5 buyin tournaments with up to 3 rebuys (big $$$ when you are 14 years old)...Havent played a good, fun home game in such a long time though..i need to get back into it one of these days. One dealer of several years ago would regularly host Chinese Poker nights and his guests always included several females because he had learned to have the whole place absolutely spotlessly Spic and Span. Once that attitude lapses it begins to be a poker night reminiscent of The Odd Couple and the females just drift away. The email poker list soon becomes males only.

For whatever reason, women just are not that into poker. Could be intimidation of so many men at the table. But I also see it as in my experience, women like a game with just a few simple rules that they can get playing fast. Also needs a fast result. At the party nights, the women gravitate to BJ and Roulette. It takes coaxing to get them to craps and poker. Many just groan as more rules get explained each hand when they come up.

OTOH, they can be fine once they learn. At my VFW game, it is about 50/50 M/F.

OTOOH, I deal the parties with a casino poker dealer. She insisted that "lots of women play!" I asked back about the M/F ratio, "excluding dealers" and is it ever more than 10% women. Got a very sheepish "no."

I once had a woman at the table told some kids (college age) that "poker is a manly game." I say this all the time about both poker and craps. Kids left and we discussed it. She got it, poker is more manly than feminine. Some women like to play, but that is the way it is.

To your point, I wonder if a bunch of women having "ladies poker night" don't end up acting like men playing poker. And then not liking it because of that?

I didn't mean to open a can of worms here.

I was thinking of an average monthly poker night type thing, not a fraternity beer bash with poker and pretzels.

If forum members in Vegas furnish their homes courtesy of the Salvation Army or their interior decorating style varies between orange crate vertical and orange crate horizontal they are unlikely to get many females to attend and probably unlikely to even know any females. If you don't air condition your home appropriately and if your home's various surfaces don't get a weekly steam cleaning, females won't be returning to your poker nights.

Now you may be okay with that.

A good many females do play poker particularly online poker. In poker rooms females have cards, bluffing ability and cleavage and they tend to make use of everything they can to win. Many women learn poker because men play poker, particularly aggressive men which are likely to be good breadwinners.

I had an electronic acquaintance in Texas who owned seven businesses around town and was active in charity golf tournaments but she frequently played online poker and once asked me if I had just been to a certain poker site because someone in her recent game had used the same 'nick' I often use on the internet. Bridge and poker are almost mandatory skills in college dorms, graduate schools, military bases, at yacht clubs, etc. During hurricane season many yachts serve as non-stop poker clubs.

I recall "A Girlhood Amongst Gamblers" the autobiography of a young girl whose family played card games together regularly. Her math skills developed and she, her sister and her brother all became nationally ranked poker players though she soon left the poker world to become a "Quant", stock market player on behalf of hedge funds.

Girls dorms are famous as tutorials for informal courses such as "Boys 101" and "Bridge". Guys dorms often have Poker and Sports Betting going on nonstop.

In the sixties Eugene Burdick was a professor at U Cal Santa Barbara and one of his popular novels featured a young man who devoured a book on poker math and one on poker tells, then went on to a very profitable lifestyle. I wish I had followed suit.

Louis L'Amour's western stories often featured poker but then of course so did the whole country. Look at the Los Angeles Times, I believe it was won in a poker game.

Oh, yeesh. Does yet another thread have to derail into aspersions and generalities against women?

I was about 5 when I learned blackjsck, maybe 7 when I was first allowed to play poker. Data point of 1.

Learned Canasta, cribbage, crazy 8s, and S!#/on your neighbor before that. Whist and hearts shortly after.

Family poker games were all 5-10-25, max 3 raises, still are. It's just a way of keeping score. No need to lose your shirt to family.

Otoh, I've been welcomed into several WoV member poker games lately and held my own, so thanks for that, guys.

Poker is great! If you are bored and want to pass time, play poker. If you want to hang with friends and shoot the sh%$, play poker. If you love competition, play poker. If you love to gamble, play poker. If you love the comradery and company of others, play poker. What's not to love! If you cant take a bad beat... stay home.

I first played poker in college.... Criss Cross, Baseball, and other fun poker games I forget. We started playing for beer. That quickly turned into bragging rights. That quickly turned into playing for money. That quickly weeded out the men from the boys.

I guess you could attribute Rounders and the WSOP for bringing Poker to light and creating such popularity.

I probably learned how to play poker when I was maybe 9 or 10....

It was five card draw and a variation that I think was called Baseball, but when I look up the rules for Baseball nowadays it sounds a little different from the version I learned. I probably just learned some house ruled version or something.

But five card draw was pretty much the version that everyone played casually.

I learned bridge and hearts at an early age. In college I played a lot of heats and pinochle. Tried to learn backgammon but there simply weren't many good players to learn from. Never got into poker nights. Crushing an opponent in bridge is more satisfying, to me, than winning a poker hand and a few dollars.
Now, if Texas Hold Em had been around, it might have been different, but seven card stud, draw poker and games like baseball or follow the queen bore me. Enjoy a good game of Guts, on occasion.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction is supposed to make sense.

As with blackjack there is probably a difference between learning to play poker and learning to play poker well.
Now that I am frequently on an oxygen machine I seem more able to focus and remember things so I may give some new games a try. I think that I am even getting better at arithmetic after a few whiffs of the stuff and plan to give blackjack another chance despite a bankroll that is depleted by my paying for the oxygen machines.
