This is why I never played online poker. I was a pretty avid poker player once upon a time, and had some decent tourney cashes, but only played "live" games. This is why. Frankly I never imagined cheating at this level. But neither did I trust it in general.

I wrote the Legal Poker Sites article. I talked to Travis Makar for about 90 minutes last night and listened to the first tape. The whole thing is mind boggling. Ultimate Poker announced today that they no longer use Iovation so some good has come out of this.

Pretty much just confirms that its rigged and utterly corrupt. Sure some poor slobs at the bottom were victims and that is necessary for where else does the money come from. The higher ups seemed to be in various shades of gray but knew of cheating going on and partook of some of the money. Some "star" names were thoroughly corrupt some were more mildly corrupt. It seems to have made little difference. Repayments were publicity stunts. As were investigations.
There was enough at the trough to survive all those troublesome investigations by goodie-goodie-Two-Shoes.

Not to quibble but I recall Moneymaker won his WSOP entry online by winning a $40 buy in tourney. But he actually won the live tournament to win millions. So he didn't really win millions online. Though I suppose you are correct that he wouldn't be there without online poker.
What should we tell the countless numbers of people who lost money to cheating poker sites with corrupt management?

The bigger issue and why this came out now is because Iovation was being used by Ultimate Poker as a verification system. Iovation was an unlicensed third party contracted by Verifi/CAMS, a licensed NV service provider. Iovation is owned by someone caught on tape as involved in the Ultimate Bet cheating scandal 5-9 years ago. The tape even implies that some of the money stolen was used to create Iovation. The easy conclusion is that stolen player money was being used by a company operating in NV that figured out a backdoor where they didn't need a licensing hearing where all of this would surely have come out. Even in the least damaging scenario Iovation facilitated the Ultimate Bet cheating and was well aware that it was happening.
