Caesars (corporate) is using a poker tournament as a job interview technique:

Wow, great article! Someone's thinking outside the proverbial box. I wonder if anyone was offended by the bullets in the accompanying photo. Entire buildings have been locked down for less than that.

That human resources worker just adds to the excitement. Who wouldn't want to get hired by someone named Tijuana Plant? I'll bet she's one of the very few who pronounce Tijuana correctly.

Job interviews are funny these days.

Frankly, I'm often on the "interview circuit" interviewing potential candidates to match what they have on their resume with their actual knowledge. Pretty much in 100% of cases, their resume didn't add up and I've written long explanations to HR that despite the fact that they didn't know their stuff, they might be a worthwhile hire.

I remember my first interview cycle with a well-known travel company. In the IT and finance culture, you typically go through a circuit of interviews. You'll be interviewed by your direct supervisor. You'll get tested on industry and product knowledge from two or more of your colleagues. You'll get introduced to the director and have a quick chat with them. The first time it was pretty daunting (and it was only one of two times I had to go through the process -- they hired me, Deloitte did not (thank god)).

For higher level execs, it makes sense to expose the potential employee to the culture of the job. But if Caesar's corporate culture is a poker game (which I sincerely doubt), then that's a problem. The last employee you want in a senior position is a outgoing gambler. Absolutely, you want them to know the industry. But industry knowledge does not tie to a poker game. It's innovative enough, but there are plenty of candidates (including those who might be the best fit) who might feel uncomfortable enough to not be at their best.

According to the article, players/candidates had to buy in with their own money. I think the job hunt aspect makes the buy in tax deductible, but I don't know about any winnings.

I think it's a good venue for Caesars recruiters to meet and observe potential hires. They own the most well known brand in poker, and it would be silly for them to hire someone who doesn't know how to play the game, and manage a table.

So after some "game theory" in their MBA programs its good they get some real world games in.

What was it? Twenty years ago that Steve Wynn did the same thing for Cocktail Waitresses... some sort of social hour (three hours?) before the screening interviews were to begin at some restaurant/lounge. Drinks were available and the bartender had a great big glass there for tips. Prospective waitresses who did not tip the bartender were supposedly marked down severely for it. Prospective CWs who ordered Top Shelf liquor or too many drinks got equally marked down. I'm not sure of the details on this because a major source for the incident got angry at the deception and walked out.
