Which is a statistically better bet, betting on the 6 and the 8 for $6 each, or betting $12 on just either the 6 or 8?

just my 2 cents......it is better to have one bet then two in a negative expectation game....With 2 bets you may decrease variance...but variance is your friend in a negative expectation game.....without it you could never win!

Thats the most confusing answer I have ever seen! Well done.

Not being a craps player, I am unsure. But I would go with the single bet, hit n run.

The seven is more likely to roll than the six.
The seven is more likely to roll than the eight.
The seven is more likely to roll than first one and then the other of the placed numbers rolling.

So I guess one place bet for 12 beats two place bets for 6 dollars. Not sure though.

its the same with BJ....its like playing 1 $500 hand or 5 $100 hands the expected loss is the same.....all you are doing is decreasing variance.....and while you are deceasing negative variance....you are also decreasing positive variance....BUT you are playing a negative expectation game!.....So why not just make one bet and have more variance.....its the only way to win big.....

the expected loss between the OP's two bets are the same

Which is a statistically better bet...

Statistically? They're dead even.

But regarding variance and all that stuff, yeah, two bets for half has a lower variance than one bet for all of it, but that by itself doesn't make either one "better".

The next question will dictate which bet to make: What are you going to do if it wins? I.E. What are the goals?

Well, we can't all be like that guy who walked into Benny Binions with a suitcase full of money and put it ALL on the line and then walked out with two suitcases full of money.
Some of us want more than thirty seconds at the table! Particularly with what they charge for airline tickets nowadays!!

Though I imagine we all dream of walking out of a casino lugging two suitcases full of money.

The better bet is pass-ODDS, and bet greater than 5x odds.
Lately winning with $5 pass and $50 odds on the 6,8, $40 odds on the 5,9, and $30 odds on the 4,10. Any odds win pays $65 total. Using $800 day session bankroll. The house advantage is miniscule with this one, less than one third of one percent, much better than the 6 and/or 8 place bets.
