Actually, he had it right. If a currency is backed by gold, it is an IOU for gold... Thats a bit of an oversimplification, but it is generally accurate.

You should really read John Maynard Keynes. I'd start with "The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money". It's only about 500 pages... A really light read. ;-)
Another one of his pieces with reading is "A Tract on Monetary Reform" (1923). It has the fameous quote "But this long run is a misleading guide to current affairs. In the long run we are all dead."... So you are right that there will be another crisis, but this book goes into great depth on why the gold standard is part of the problem.
Anyway... I think we were on the gold standard during the great depression. You could be making a post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy.

Listen, and this is for everyone reading this. I dont have anything against anyone on this forum including you beachmonkey, if youre even a real person, i dont want to make enemies, but lots of people call me out and i have to defend myself that's all and it might come off arrogant or brash.
Ever since day 1 that I joined this forum i have been upfront and 100% honest with everyone on here and in person about my progress playing blackjack and the roller coaster that it is. I have strong opinions as well and I guess i come off stubborn at times as well. No ones perfect.
