Im sure there is a thread on this topic already but i havent managed to find it.
My friend is convinced that he can beat the continous shuffle machines at my local casino. The inside of the machine looks like a big ferris wheel with 4 decks and the dealer inserts the discards after every hand, there are about 20 cards in a notch ready to be pulled out.
His theory is to watch and if few pictures or aces come out for a few hands in a row he bets. Is there any possiblity a short term count like this could work? Has anyone heard on any other feasible schemes to beat these machines?

A CSM is just like a shoe with 5% penetration. Or 10%, or whatever, it depends on how many hands the dealer lets elapse before he re-inserts the discards into the CSM. I've seen this procedure vary a little bit, but I don't think I've ever seen a dealer deal out more than 3 hands before re-inserting the discards. They should be trained to do it after every hand and I'm guessing most do, especially on a busy table with lots of cards coming out.
Getting back to your point, beating a shoe game with 50% penetration is hard enough counting cards. With the marginal penetration that a CSM provides, forget about it. You might be able to lessen the house edge by only betting after a run of small cards and no aces or tens, but you'll never overcome it. I guess if the rules were extremely liberal, providing a tiny house edge off the top, then maybe. But doubtful still.

The only way that it would be possible to beat at CSM would be if for some reason the cards are not being randomly shuffled and you could somehow track certain card sequences that keep coming up, similar to shuffle tracking. I pretty sure these machines are tested thoroughly to ensure true randomness though.

Not for Nuthin, I basically despise CSM's. But this is somewhat exploitable... one for the good guys.
IMHO shuffling stops, then you deal. Justifying shuffling while dealing, is like magic winners and losers on the internet (ie Internet Poker).

Some people need to reimagine their thinking.

I believe CSMs are unbeatable by any means so far used against them. My casino used to offer shoe games but has gone to a massive "herd" of CSMs with dealers who act like robots, firing the cards at you like bullets and scooping and redealing as fast as is humanly possible. It is impossible for me to enjoy blackjack there now, so I only play video poker and craps at my "home" casino. I think players could change this if they would just stop playing against machines. I think it is no different than sitting down to a sucker game paying 6:5 on blackjacks. Players who know anything about the game shouldn't tolerate pathetic game conditions like the 6:5 payout, and the additional house edge gained by exposing your bankroll to about 20% more hands per hour with CSMs. If people would just stop filling these tables, the casinos would get the message and stop forcing them on us. You'll notice that they don't play with CSMs in the high limit rooms anywhere. Hmmm, I wonder why that is? (end sarcasm).
