MDawg, we’ve see photos of your watches and tagged Brioni shirts, but do you own any Baccarat glassware?

I got some Waterford crystal whisky footed tumblers as a wedding gift but I have never purchased any "good" crystal. I do have a crystal Ice Bucket that I like but I doubt it is a big name.

Have many different sizes of Waterford crystal, water goblets, wine, champagne flutes, tumblers, small glasses, large glasses, here are just a few I grabbed from one of our cabinets, all in need of dusting

but as far as Baccarat it might be that empty Louis XIII bottles are all I have.

I recall a story from Ripley's Believe it or Not about a king who insisted that everything he drank be imbibed from a crystal chalice because he believed that the crystal had the power to render any poison harmless, but ended up dying from an infection he got when the chalice broke and a sliver from it embedded in his foot.

I tell you it’s wonderful to be here, man. I don’t give a damn who wins or loses. It’s just wonderful to be here with you people.

We also have scores of some other kind of crystal, it's neither Waterford nor Baccarat, cabinet fulls of it.

And while on the subject, what about solid sterling silverware?
We have this one set of 12 that has never been used

along with a set that we do use on some occasions. I just grabbed some of the spoons from that set to take a pic.

I didn't take any pics, but also serving trays, decanters, all sorts of ridiculously heavy solid sterling silver stuff. Jean Valjean (pre rehabilitation) would have had a field day.

My father passed away recently and my mother is 87 years ond at that point she is trying to give things away. Neither me nor either of my two sisters want the silver collection. To me that is just an old people thing.

In that we have that full set of 12 sterling silver I took a picture of, and have never even opened them up to use them - I would have to agree that silverware isn't particularly in use these days.
But, we still do use our one set of sterling for special occasion dinner parties, and we use the serving trays and decanters every now and then.
If she's looking to give them away, I'll take them all! I'll pay melt value or close.

take the silver and use it or not. After she is gone, you can sell it for about $20 an ounce ... each item weighs at least an ounce. Local jeweler here says he'll buy silver, so I get the idea many/most do.Quote: DRichMy father passed away recently and my mother is 87 years ond at that point she is trying to give things away. the next time Dame Fortune toys with your heart, your soul and your wallet, raise your glass and praise her thus: “Thanks for nothing, you cold-hearted, evil, damnable, nefarious, low-life, malicious monster from Hell!” She is, after all, stone deaf. ... Arnold Snyder

I would never sell at as it has sentimental value to my mother. It will be given to kids or grandkids and if they sell it I am fine with it.

As long as the silverware is solid sterling (not plated) there is no risk of lead or anything like that, so if you like, you may eat with genuine silverware every day of your life and not worry. Other than about losing or scratching it - those are the two reasons why we don't use the real stuff daily, but even among stainless steel flatware there is a wide range of quality and prices too. One set of stainless flatware we have is pretty expensive and it just glides into your mouth it's so smoooth and perfectly weighted too so that it balances just right in your hands so you can't tell me that that experience isn't worth the extra cost.
Even among hotels, they know the range of what's quality and what is not, and if you compare the flatware in Vegas at say Crockford's Resorts World or Wynn with what they provide at say Treasure Island you'll know what I mean.
