My Hometown. Miami, Florida.
We have 80 degree Winter days where certain other places are -4! :D
We are really lucky when it comes to Hurricanes. Extremely lucky, only THREE Hurricanes have really messed us up since 1992 and they were Andrew, Katrina, and Irma. And they each were over a decade apart from each other! :D
We have PLENTY of Oceans to swim in! :D
We are a world wide known Party Destination! Woo hoo!

Hey, you never know. She could have been a beautiful woman who just happened to have um, strong hands. ;) Jennifer Garner is a beautiful woman but it has been pointed out that she has um, a strong looking jawline. ;)
She doesn't look like a man. That's probably why her voce is so, so people don't think that. Are you a man Kentry? Lol.Quote: NathanHey, you never know. I'm bemused by the US tax system. For a cashier at Walgreens, aren't your income taxes just settled by witholding by your employer? I thought that for someone with a single, simple source of income, that there was nothing or damn near nothing to report, and precious little to misreport either deliberately or accidentally.Quote: NathanWell, let's just say I kind of fudged the truth to the IRS a little bit. I kind of claimed that I made slightly less than I actually did. And it seems like the IRS is going to use a tool that they can use to find out the real truth, kind of like an audit. They will collect some income today. I told them that I would just pay my taxes by March 28th and they agreed but now the fact that I got a letter stating that they are going to use the tool and collect some income is a monkey wrench, pun intended, I guess.
It's so much simpler this side of the pond. Here, if you only have one salaried source of income, then the employer collects and reports tax precisely and the individual doesn't have any tax reporting to do at all, pretty much ever. If one also has secondary income, such as renting out a property or selling on ebay as a business, then we do annual self assessment which is dead simple. Our tax authority, HMRC, VERY rarely challenges these self assessments, even for self employed business folks.
We basically say 'We made a profit of £xxxx from some sideline and here's 20% of it' and HMRC say 'Thanks for that, cya next year'*
We don't normally get any over collected taxes back at the end of the year, because they get collected properly in the first place.
Oh... and HMRC has no interest in what we win or lose gambling $:o)
So, Nathan, I'm shocked that you can get in any sort of issue with the IRS.
Good luck, and just in the interest of staying out of jail. Don't detail your 'fudge' on a forum.
*Oh yes.... and we can even say "I didn't make any profit this year because I needed to buy a laptop and some tools and pay a big internet bill in order to run my business" and HMRC say "Yeah, whateva : No tax to pay then: Better luck next year, cya"
I'm paraphrasing, of course.
OMG, it sounds like it!Quote: GWAEOD... much more complicated.
About 30 years ago, we used to get 'Married man's allowance' and we had to claim tax relief on a primary mortgage, but even that was dead simple. Now everything is done at source.
E.g. Say my salary (or in my case company pension) is £26,000
I have a personal tax free allowance of £11,500 ( like everyone else )
If my wife is a low earner, she can reassign some of her allowance to me.
I therefore pay 20% x (26,000-11,500) and that is all processed by my primary employer, from my salary in monthly 'Pay as you Earn' installments. ( similar to witholding, but more precise?)
If, let's say i have to spend £200 per year getting my work overalls cleaned, I drop an online note to HMRC and they increase my tax free allowance by £200, and tell my employer, saving me the tax on that 'expense'. I'd never have to mention it again and they'd give me that allowance till I tell them not to.
If I get up to (IIRC) £1000 of bank interest each year, I don't have to report it.
Primary mortgages have tax relief factored in at source.
No fannying around with deductibles for most folk. No annual tax return unless ones affairs are 'complex'
We do have a secondary 'tax' of National Insurance to cover all state benefits, State pension, health care etc, and that is also all processed by the employer.
Recently, it became mandatory for all employers to offer a private pension, and again, all processed by the employer.
As a company director, with slightly complex income pattern, I DO have to do an annual tax return online. It's as simple or as complex as my business records make it, and so long as I don't take the p155, I never get questioned, challenged or audited.
I HAVE had a complex business tax issue where my business was in dispute with HMRC, but ultimately, I told them what I calculated as owed and they just said. 'OK. Thanks.' and that was the end of it.
There are 'state benefits' claimed by many poor families 'Income support' and 'tax credits' and 'housing benefits' but these are generally outside of the tax system. As a 'regular employee' I never got to touch on those aspects.
What I'm getting at is that we generally simply don't have to 'do our taxes' with or without software or advisors. So seeing Nathan 'get in a mess with IRS' shocks me.
That makes almost as much sense as "the good news about the IRS picking up some income is that I won't have to think up some lottery picks to waste that income on"Quote: NathanWell, the good news about the IRS picking up some income is that I won't owe them the income. :)
Quote: NathanWell, the good news about the IRS picking up some income is that I won't owe them the income. :)
this literally makes no sense.
Also owing the IRS when you only make 24k a year makes no sense. Even if they withhold 20% you should be still getting a refund at that income level.

To be technically honest, since you have quoted my very first unedited quote, 832, 329, 137,864,1983 ,2910, 47, 48, 44, 92 are my promised original numbers. The numbers are box or straight. :)
To make this interesting, I promise I will donate $25 to this year's WOV Spring Fling and $25 to one of the top 10 posters on WOV of my choosing if none of the unedited Number Predictions show up unless something really bad happens to me. ;) :/
832 showed up on 2/28. :) I won the bet! :D
