Quote: beachbumbabsLoved, loved, loved the Pontiac Aztec when it came out around 2003, with the tailgate/camping package. The back end was shaped funny because it was built both to take a camper screen when the tail was open, and to provide comfortable bumper seating when closed. Beautifully thought-out SUV with every toy I could want; speakers, outlets, grill that hung off the bumper, etc. Got talked out of it when my XL husband was not comfortable in the front seat (either side, but definitely couldn't drive it). Still miss that car, and never even got to own it.
Think it was voted ugliest car since the Edsel about 3 times that year.
Me, I think there are about 5 cars since then far uglier. Ford Flex is one of them. But if the Flex does what the Aztec did for functionality (and it may, I'm not in the market so I don't know), I'd buy it anyway. :) Might be perfect for your little family.
I agree it is not the most appealing but there are benefits. It ranks pretty high on safety, it has a 3rd row but still tons of rear storage. Plus it has all the fancy Ammenities such as navigation, heated seats, back up camera. It is hard to get all of that in the 24k range.
I don't care what cars look like anymore. Is that a sign I am getting old? I am all for functionality. I have a mustang convertible that I barely drive anymore. My wife wants me to sell it but I feel like I need to hold on to it to avoid a midlife crisis. I use to drag race it and I removed the back seats so I can't even drive it with kids. It also takes very high octane and until recently I couldn't afford to fuel it.

I sold cars in I think 2001-2002. That was the year the Aztec came out. It was the toughest sale on the lot but people who bought them were very happy.

Seems like a niche target market. I'd be willing to say that if someone came to the conclusion that they wanted that specific vehicle, it was likely for a myriad of reasons, and would seem unlikely that they wouldn't be appreciative of the purchase.
Though the same could be said for nearly any vehicle I suppose, and I would presume there are exceptions to that statement.

I get stupidity. I really want a '78 Chevette, it's on my dream car list. But you gotta be stupid smartly.
1 - '92 GMC Jimmy. $1,000
1 - 350 GM crate motor. $2,000
1 - GMC Jimmy full body kit. $500
A solid day of labor, maybe a week if you want nice paint, and there's your Typhoon. One with a proper V-8, brand new, that has more hp and better mpg than your hairdryer turbo setup. And it costs less than a beat up atv, leaving you more than 10 grand for all the hi-top sneakers, Jordache jeans, and denim jackets you can handle.

I really want an AMC Pacer but I have no mechanical skills and I'm sure the cost to keep it running would be prohibitive.
I got an 87 Chevy Blazer 4WD, 110,000 miles. Bought it in 88 or 89 used ( had been National Car rental fleet vehicle since new and had 20,000 miles on it. People come knock on my door and want to give me 1K for it all the time. Just spent 2K for the third transmission. I say no thanks to the offers. I actually bought 2 of these in 88 or 89, three weeks apart, from the same dealer. The first one slid off a snow covered road up in the mtns on New Years Day, and landed right side up after rolling a couple times down the very steep Mtn cliff, landed in the headwaters of the Talullah River. 15 degrees outside, foot of snow on the ground, water coming in the truck, girlfriend bleeding and a bit upset. Top crushed in, all windows broken, doors will not open. Managed to kick her's open. Got a ride, rented another SUV from a dealer in Clayton Ga, the owner that came in and met me (on New Years Day!). Went back to the other dealer and bought the second one the next week, told him "I love that truck, sell me another one", didn't tell him what happened to the first one...;-)Quote: FaceQuote: GWAEMy boss bought a typhoon last summer. Depends on the build. If you buy an original, yeah, a 40yr old car might have constant niggles. A resto? Not so much. Of course, a good resto will still set you back $15k - $20k. It's not so much the "keep it running", it's paying $20k for a $4k turd that gets ya lol. I'm having the same problem with another dream car of mine, the Datsun 510.
Don't forget the comprehensive coverage. You don't want to pay that glass out of pocket.

All of that glass is exactly the reason I want it. I want to see what the inside temperature would rise to in the 120 degree Las Vegas sun.
My first car was a 77 or 78 4 speed datsun B210 with nice rims, tinted windows and a nice paint job. I didn't really appreciate it because I really wanted a muscle car. That car took a beating. I rarely ever took off without dropping the clutch and roasting the tires. I red lined it constantly and floored it on the freeway any chance I got. I beat it all to hell.Quote: FaceDepends on the build. If you buy an original, yeah, a 40yr old car might have constant niggles. A resto? Not so much. I'm confused, again. I thought this thread was where you just put random BS that didn't fit anywhere else, I thought that was why GWAE started it. That seemed to have been working quite well, for quite awhile. Now there seems to be a discussion about 'the discussion' going on here. I suggested a thread for just that purpose, I was kidding, but maybe I had it just right. 2FQuote: rxwineIf the bridge don't fit, you must acquit.

1. Local, miles are low price is $32000 after interst
2. Drive to Michigan (4ish hours both ways), higher mileage Than we would like but price is $30000 after interest.
3. Would require a flight to Connecticut and a 7 hour drive home. Miles are low and cost after interest is $28000. Flight would be free as I have a ton of points.
I am leaning to 3. If someone called and offered me $4k to drive there and back I would do it in a minute.

Maybe you could plan to do a touristy thing while there, if you can find something nearby. Then you have another reason to be there.
Or, alternatively, on the drive back.
(not that dealers would ever try that)

Very good avice for advice for anyone buying a car. This is first car purchase in 10 years. I am surprised to see how many are now pull resort fees type fees. One even had a 1299 dealer fee add on.
