I am long overdue a trip to Vegas and it appears a gap in my work schedule can be found either last week of July or first week of August which is not my usual time of year to visit. Having read about the heatwave in the US (I am in the UK) is it hotter than usual in Vegas at the moment? Yes I know it is in the desert and looking at the forecast does not always give the full picture. I see mins of 85 and maxes of 110. As I will be there for a week I will not be spending all of my time gambling in the comfort of the air conditioned casinos. If I keep indoors between certain hours can I miss the extreme heat or is it all pervading.

I suggest you rent a car . Then you can drive up Mount Charleston 35 north of LV . One year during the month of July while the temp on the Strip was 103 F we went up Charleston Mountain and found a cool 72 F waiting for us to enjoy.

With an airconditioned car you shall survive the week and take in the sights in comfort as well.

It's pretty darn hot! For those of us that live here or visit often, we are probably used to the heat a bit more and try to work around it. I know if I am planning outdoor activity like hiking or bike riding, I get up early (6am) and get to it before 9am. As far as just walking or driving between casinos, that doesn't bother me as much, although I often take a break and head home for a few hour in the afternoon to avoid the worst of it. For those visiting and not as used to the heat, especially those from a cooler climate, I suspect the heat can really take it's toll. Especially multiple days of it. It will wear you out quicker and I suspect make your trip a less enjoyable. If you have the option of scheduling late September or October, you will probably find it much more enjoyable, especially if you like to do a lot of walking the strip or downtown areas.

In the evening Downtown, a city fire truck would often park
for awhile while they took a break. I talked to those guys
sometimes and for the most part they hated the heat. Its
cool to say you don't hate it if you live in Vegas, but it is
a giant pain. The firemen hate it because they work
outside a lot, you never really get used to it. And it makes
a lot more work for them, with people getting heatstroke,
and fires caused by things over heating.

UK huh? Summers there...cloudy and rainy, yes? I'd think that any Englishman that's comes over now, and steps off the plane and into any of the lower 48, might instantly die of heat stroke.

I can look out my window right now and see Canada. At 10am, it was 93*F. It thunderstormed last night and got HOTTER because of it. It doesn't even feel like you're breathing because the air is the same temp and humidity as your insides. Bearable? I suppose. Comfortable in any way, shape or form? God, no!

But it's Vegas. I hear it's a dry heat ;) At the very least, you'll have a new found appreciation for your less-than-stellar summers =)

I just looked at the weather there and it's 104, but feels like 98. Here, it's 98 but feels like 110. Humidity makes quite a bit of difference!

When I visit Vegas in the summertime, I just stay inside. That's where all the fun is!

Thanks for the replies. I have a couple of weeks to make my mind up but I do want to get away from the UK even if it is not Vegas. We have just had the wettest June on record and July has continued the same. Last year Summer was on a Wednesday afternoon! Even within the UK the weather varies quite a lot. In the West (where I am) and the North we have much more rain than other parts of the country. Some places in the South currently have a hose pipe ban because they are still in drought.

Yeah, well look at that weather again. lol Today and tomorrow highs of 114. Yesterday was 112. Low temps of 90-92 and that happens at 5am. As soon as the sun comes it, the temp starts to rise. 100 by 9am. Last night it was still 100 at 11:30 when the news was on.

I assume you are talking about some sort of heat index rather than actual high as both yahoo weather and weather.com say Indiana has highs of low to mid 90's.

bbcpjc Have had reasonable summer heat in Connecticut 80's low 90's. Foxwoods. Mohegan Sun. If you are older (over 45) you will enjoy the area. Great countryside.

As I also have to travel to Vegas I wouldn't suggest going in July-August. Did that once-- Whew. Came out of a concert at the Hilton well after 11 pm it was 98 degrees approaching mid night!! I "died".
