I-5 in Portland is still pretty normal, i.e. lots of stop and go, but it's moving.

Wow. I was thinking about driving to a better spot, but I maybe should be happy with my 67 seconds of totality at home...
What say you Wiz? If you had 67 seconds of totality in your back yard, would you dare leave home?

Depends on the details. If no traffic, sure, I'd drive the extra 20 miles or so for the extra minute or so. If traffic or parking looked to be bad, yeah, I'd just kick it at home.
If I lived anywhere on the path I'd consider renting out rooms in my house, given that motel rooms are going for $2,500 the night before.
A good AP for the homeowner.
I took some pictures of the sun today and they came out pretty well. I used a solar cover over the lens that was meant for my father's telescope. Always knew it would come in handy eventually.
Forecast for Huntington on Monday -- Sunny!
This may be my last post here before the event. If so, I wish all the WoV members watching back east clear weather, clear highways, friendly fellowship, and an experience of a lifetime. Same with WoV planning to watch it anywhere. I'd like to suggest somebody open a new thread for the eclipse after the event where we can share stories and pictures.
I'll be in Vegas for this supposed eclipse. What day and at what time (am or pm) do I gotta look at the sky for this? Do I actually need some fancy glasses?
Chances are, I'll forget, or somehow end up sleeping through it. And/or I'll watch it live on YouTube or twitch -- much more interesting than seeing something in "real life".

I think it start around 9am and ends at 10:30or so. About 9:45 should be the time it is most covered (about 80% in Las Vegas).
I am shocked about the talks of crowds. It is a workday and school day for most people.
Quote: SOOPOOTo odious, BBB, and Doc. Include me and my two adult sons in whatever dinner plans that are made. I am not worried about the traffic from Cherokee to Andrews Monday morning. I figure I'll be leaving around 8am and if there is that much traffic I don't make it there I'll consider it a lesson learned. I can't carpool because we are going back to Atlanta directly from Andrews.
Looking forward to seeing you. I'm up for games and lunch/dinner Sunday as well; deferring to og and Doc for any group planning or reservations.
Quote: gordonm888I cant wait for the first claim that the eclipse never happened -that it was a created by a government conspiracy using orbiting satellites to briefly obscure the sun as a test of a new weapons system.
They moon is just a hologram.

According to one source, in Vegas, the partial eclipse starts at 9:09 AM, gets to the moon covering about 3/4 of the sun's diameter at 10:27, and ends at 11:52. Yes, you need the "special glasses" to view it safely. I don't think that is enough of a cover to make it noticeably darker.
I was told once that, while looking at the sun is dangerous in and of itself, an eclipse makes it more dangerous because of some form of rays (gamma? alpha?) bouncing off the edge of the moon.

The moon and the sun are roughly the same size and located at roughly the same distance above the flat earth.

Obviously.
There are more urgent matters. I'll be publicly sacrificing a virgin tomorrow. Should I be concerned about vampires during the eclipse, or does enough sunlight get through to kill them?

What's the best Internet site for todays event ?
Looks cloudy outside. Meh.
When's the next eclipse?
The Silverton Casino said it is welcoming guests to view the solar eclipse from the fifth floor of the parking garage. The first 1000 guests to visit the Player’s Club at the casino will receive a free pair of eclipse glasses. Since the eclipse will end at about lunchtime, the casino is also offering a 70 percent discount off at the Seasons Buffet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Not the best buffet, but they usually have roasted beets
Quote: RSWhen's the next eclipse?
April 2024.
Looks like I'm in the path of totality for that one, so I'll wait.
Quote: rxwineIf the sun doesn't reappear you got the wrong glasses.
That's funny.
So vegas gets 357 days of sun and the 3 days I am here it rains and at the same time as the eclipse. I wonder if books had a line on that happening?

You're going to have to go south into Ohio.
"God save us!"
"Heh, what am I looking at now, sonny boy?"
I think I saw Trump trying to look at the sun without the special glasses.

Yeah I forgot... that's a hologram too.
Skies were clear in East Tennessee and I wanted the period of totality to go on and on -it ended too soon. The difference between 100% obscuration and 99.9% obscuration was large and dramatic. The stars and planets visible in the sky during totality was amazing. Definitely something I will remember all my life!!
The traffic was also amazing. With 2 hours to go before totality, southbound Interstate 75 towards the line of maximum totality was backed up -like a parking lot, at a standstill - for 40 miles, and with one hour to go the backup was 45 miles long. I imagine that tens of thousands of people ultimately pulled over and parked on the shoulder of the interstate in order to view the totality.
Drippy overcast & as usual, not a single creepy person disappeared from Earth, in either direction. Not even an eclipse delay at a ballpark to enjoy. Survival crackers in my cataclysm cave will be getting more stale, at least 'till the next doomsday.
Quote: 100xOddsany video of the eclipse going from full sun to totality back to full sun with out it being shaky (like the guy holding the camera was drunk)?
I suspect you will soon find links to lots of videos of this eclipse showing the transition. Here's one:

Greetings from Bend Oregon. Had a magnificent eclipse today. Weather was great. No issues with traffic. Parked for free right in front of the Huntington OR general store. Will share pictures and video after i get back home.
That proves he's making America great again.
Quote: BobDancerThen you probably missed Trump taking credit for the eclipse. Said both Obama and Clinton had 8 full years and couldn't deliver one, and he was able to do it in only 8 months.
That proves he's making America great again.
He stole the idea from this guy.

Standing on the gorilla face rock formation?
As far as the actual eclipse... it could not have went better. Perfect weather. 2 and a half minutes of that magic totality when you could look at the moon with what appeared to be a diamond ring around it. A few seconds of those weird shadows on the ground. My sons, who tend to be pretty stoic, were quite animated!
In summary, I am so happy I did this with my sons and the WoV members who showed up. I hope to see you all in 7 years for 'totality in Buffalo'.....
Doc and BBB I believe are planning to post a more thorough and photo containing summary. I can't wait!

Lol, definitely looks like it! Except that can't feel good on the gorillas eye ball...
