February 2023: December-2022 capped another record year.
This report is written by Ken Adams.
December capped off 2022 in style. By the end of November, the national GGR had already surpassed all of 2021 by 3.6%. December was the frosting on that cake. Casino revenue for the month ran a close parallel to the previous year, but sports and igaming combined for over $1.2 billion in the month, up 76% from December 2021.
Nebraska and Virginia are new to the chart in December. The December numbers do not include Kentucky historic racing machines, West Virginia casinos, and sports GGR from Arizona and Illinois. Bill banning smoking in AC casinos gets public hearing Monday
New Jersey (Atlantic City) - Brent Johnson, NJ Advance Media - After years of lobbying but little action, a proposed law that would completely ban smoking in Atlantic City casinos will get a spotlight in Trenton on Monday. State lawmakers will hold the first public hearing on the bipartisan bill, which would close a 17-year loophole that has allowed casinos to have smoking sections even after the Garden State banned smoking in most indoor spaces in 2006. It would also bar smoking in simulcast facilities…the event will be “discussion only,” said Sen. Joe Vitale, D-Middlesex. https://bit.ly/3jT03ka

Star fights for financial future after dire outlook
Oceania (Australia) - Amelia McGuire, Morning Herald - Sydney’s Star casino is in a fight for its financial future after flagging a hit of up to $1.6 billion if the NSW government executes planned tax increases as the organization grapples with the fallout from two devastating inquiries into its operations. The price of Star Entertainment Group’s shares dropped to their lowest level in history on Monday, shedding 20 per cent after it released a dire market outlook in which it warned the NSW government’s proposed tax changes would force it to “undertake an urgent review” of the Sydney operations and assets. https://bit.ly/3E4cJvo
