As you may know, I shot a bunch of videos on silly poker games recently, like Indian Poker and Screw Your Neighbor.

Next, I'd like to do some on more serious poker games. So far I plan on:

1. Omaha
2. Pineapple
3. Badugi
4. Razz
5. Chinese Poker

Any other suggestions? I'm trying to stick to games one might find in a casino, but willing to settle for anything fairly serious that doesn't involve wild cards. Things like Mexican Sweat are not out of the question.

Thank you.

I would be very interested in seeing an introduction to short deck poker and then followed by a serious in depth look at it. It seems to be a game now being played internationally at poker tournaments.

Is 7 card stud, (2 hole cards, 4 up cards, and 1 hole card, pick the best 5 cards) available?

Pineapple or open face Chinese poker would be ideal I think. Very tractable you mathematical analysis.

I have heard that. It wouldn't make for dramatic video to say it's Texas Hold 'Em with a depleted deck. Discussion of strategy would be a very worthy topic, but the number of times I've played the game is zero.

Initially, I filed that and Texas Hold 'Em under "common knowledge." However, maybe I should cover both those too. I think 95% of the adult US population could not put the poker hands in rank order. I am hoping to get through 5 -7 games on the next shot.

1. Short Deck
I have analyzed all starting hands in Short Deck Poker for their EV and can share that info, if you are interested.

BTW. Short Deck has A-6-7-8-9 as a straight!

Short Deck also plays like a completely different game than standard Texas Hold'em. Most players call pre-flop and see the flop. The possibility of straights is so high that betting on One Pair and Two Pair hands tends to be very infrequent in general. There is also a lot of all-in betting.

And I have seen televised tournaments of Short deck hold'em on cable TV.

2. Badugi is the game that most poker players don't understand very well. That is an opportunity for you.

3. On the other hand, Omaha is very popular, particularly as Omaha Hi-LO and Pot-Limit Omaha (High Only) and has been much-analyzed. Note that Omaha is usually played as pot-limit, because otherwise the best play is often to jam (go all-in) on a good starting hand -which really shuts down the game.

4. A popular up-and-coming variant is Double Board Hold-em. Players all get two hole cards as in conventional but the dealer deals two boards - as "two flops" then "two turn cards", then "two river cards." The winners of the top board hand and bottom board hand split the pot. The game is usually played with a "Bomb" bet structure; Bomb means that there are no blinds but a large ante paid by all players. Then betting proceeds post-flop, post-turn and post-river in the conventional fashion.

5. I recommend the book "Modern Poker" by Michael Acevedo to see where poker analysis has evolved to. All the serious poker players I know have been studying it.

Do a demo video on 31...

I'd be happy to play, if I'm allowed to travel outside of NY ever again.

44 is an interesting / crazy game

Each player is dealt 4 cards.

Then a round of betting.

Then one card dealt face up.

Then another round of betting.

Rinse and repeat until 4 cards face up.

You can use all 4 cards on board and 4 in your hand to make best standard 5 card poker hand.

Fairly certain you won’t find this one in any casino. Lol.

Hell of a note when you make a great hand and run into someone dealt 4 of a kind in their hand.

When discussing Omaha, you might, as a humorous aside, mention the best looking, but terrible, starting hand: Four Aces. I looks SO pretty, but it’s only a single pair and impossible to improve.

Low-ball poker comes in two different variants.

Razz is seven-card stud where you attempt to make the low 5-card poker hand. You usually need to specify whether the lowest possible hand is the A-5 wheel or the non-suited 7-5432.

Low ball draw -with 3 draws -was the game played widely in California poker rooms in the 1980s. You are dealt 5 cards, you bet, then discard up to 3 cards (or 4 cards if you show you are keeping an ace) and draw new cards. A round of betting (and folding) then you draw a 2nd time and then a 3rd time. There is all types of strategy issues about what kinds of hand to stand pat with; and whether to continue to stand pat on a subsequent round if an opponent stands pat as well, etc. Low hands were judged without regard to suits and straights, A2345 was best low hand.

Mexican Poker is pretty common in Southern California casinos.

Flushes beat full houses because there are fewer flush opportunities.

We might be thinking of different versions. What are the rules in So Cal?

Also I recommend considering STRIP POKER as a video subject.

I've actually wondered about the rules for that. As I understand it, everybody antes a piece of clothing and one item is removed from the pot and the game. After that, I'm not sure. Do you bet clothing or is it simply the highest hand wins the antes after a game of five-card draw?

I could never muster the courage to even discuss the game in mixed company let alone make a video about it.

the way we used to play it was five card draw and the lowest hand removed an article of clothing.

Strip poker is a good one because the point is not to win any given hand necessarily. The point is usually to be successful foreplay, which in my experience means I’ve tried to draw to a loser in some circumstances.

If a video does get made, I think I speak for the entire forum in saying it would be okay with all of us if you pass on being in it. Except maybe as the dealer...?
