Was chatting to my live online dealer today, (one of the nicer features of this Casino)

Now, these guys in Latvia work lots of long shifts at very low wage, with no windows in the casino room. I feel sorry for them sometimes as I chuck away the kind of money they can only dream about.

Anyway, I like this guy and we chat about what he will do in his next few days off. He wants to play a few rounds of BJ in his local Bricks and Mortar casino.

I begged him to reconsider being so careless with his money. I pointed out to him that as a dealer, he should know that the house edge is always against him. He was dismissive: He's been lots of times, playing €5 a hand and hasn't lost the last several times he's gone.

So after checking he wasn't Martying ( He hadn't heard of Martingale! ) I asked if he was hole-carding, card counting, or had any big idea for beating the house. He had, and it made my heart sink:-

"The house edge is only about 0.7% and that's the average for everyone. I play at tables where drunks are doing stupid stuff like splitting tens and as they lose, I win"

FacePalm: He would not be told.
Psalm 25:16 Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. Proverbs 18:2 A fool finds no satisfaction in trying to understand, for he would rather express his own opinion.

Maybe he's more like one of those "drunks splitting tens" than you'd like?

He did say he never did side bets or take insurance. So maybe he is not beyond hope.
His money, his choice, I guess.

I know many dealers who gamble. I used to go to Sunset Station after my dealing shift at Fiesta Henderson. No big deal.

Saying dealers shouldn't gamble is like saying bartenders shouldn't enjoy cocktails, or chefs shouldn't patronize another's restaurant. What a dealer does on his own time for fun is his call. His money, his action, I wouldn't judge.

All true, of course. It was none of my business.
Still amazed that he hadn't heard of Marty and had such a bad grasp of the probabilities.

Alas, this may be true, but there are only two gamblers I worry about: me and my wife as family. To every other gambler I say "Enjoy, and good luck!"

Dan, you apparently didn't see the scope of this post. The title isn't "Dealers shouldn't play", it is "A dealer who shouldn't play". The post then reveals this player's suboptimal strategy. The fact that he is a dealer is not why OnceDear's opinion is that this guy shouldn't play, but is why OnceDear assumes he should be more informed about better playing strategies.

Why would you voluntarily out yourself as a probable (if not actual) card counter, hole carder, shuffle tracker, etc.?????

That stymies me, as your online posts/comments to this dealer are undoubtedly logged through the website.

I don't feel that I indicated any more than being a savvy player in what this casino deems an effectively uncountable game. They already banned me from exploiting their bonuses. I reckon they may one day boot me just because I'm a long term statistical anomally (winner) in their various games. Just luck of course :o)

Really? What did you mean when you stated:

"I asked if he was hole-carding, card counting, or had any big idea for beating the house. He had, and it made my heart sink:-"?

Seems obvious that you asked questions that evidenced your knowledge of advantage tactics. No?

Let me rephrase this: a gambler doesn't make the call (or should have any feelings) as to whether anyone else - dealer or not - should or should not gamble in his life.
