I wonder how much you save in construction costs by eliminating hundreds of windows? Savings on heat probably don't amount to much in UC_ Santa Barbara.
link to original post

I inagine the savings come when not every room needs to be adjacent to an exterior wall to knock a window through.
Instead of the typical dorm layout of wall - room - hall -room - wall, you can have multiple hallways and more than two ranks of rooms, packing more residents into the sardine tin.
May the cards fall in your favor.

"A Los Angeles County casino was hit with a hefty fine for failing to properly alert financial regulators and the Internal Revenue Service when a “high roller” walked in with $100 million in cash to bet on games of baccarat.

Federal prosecutors say the unnamed whale — who was described only as a Chinese national — made over 100 visits to the Bicycle Hotel & Casino over eight months in 2016, often arriving with duffle bags full of cash to bet on marathon sessions of the high-stakes card game.

On numerous occasions, the gambler’s assistant would exchange millions in cash for chips, with the high roller cashing in and cashing out approximately $100 million during the course of his months-long gambling spree, prosecutors said."

I think I read a few years back that California card rooms have had more federal raids than the entire rest of the US casino/card room industry combined, mostly KYC violations and loan sharking.

Yeah, inflation and shrinkflation has nothing to do with over 20% of all USD in circulation being printed in the last two years while supply chains are disrupted, it’s crypto’s fault.

I’m not even saying a lot of that didn’t need to be done and things never go well forever, but there seems to be a pretty clear cause and effect.

I already knew about the printing of money but still Crypto has an affect which could get out of control. Imagine if everyone bought shiba and became hood rich overnight. Also consider the classified budget with no oversight. The pentagon cannot account for trillions. Bill Clinton wanted the govt to audit the classified budget. I think the govt has been modifying the prices of crypto.

Saudi Arabia did the same thing. They built cities for the Bedouin tribes only to find out they had no interest in living in them.

Sort of the result of an easy peasy money policy for a decade straight without a comparable increase in production me thinks. The supply chain stuff is temporary, but I don’t think inflation is going away, there’s simply too many dollars chasing the amount of products regardless.

You’re not wrong. And good and bad everywhere. And people in general seem to be getting more rude and less polite to each other during the pandemic, I’ve been guilty of it myself at times.

There IS an east coast stereotype of rudeness and quickness to anger, however. Maybe it’s just a Philly/NY/Boston and AC stereotype.

It’s funny that for a decade straight monetary policy has dumped on lower class workers and the first time they have any leverage whatsoever the people who have benefited from easy access to artificially cheap money for a decade whine about people “not wanting to work.”

I put this here because it's off the subject of Covid
you will often hear well off people say when asked about their wealth that "I worked very hard"

I'm not wealthy, but I'm comfortable - and I did work hard at times in my life, but I would never say that

I know that the main reason I have what I do is that I was lucky - lucky to be born and raised with advantages over others

some wealthy people are brilliant and many did work very hard - but for many luck was a huge part of the equation

if I had endured the struggles of so many due to income inequality I really doubt that I would be comfortable now
I don't believe I would have triumphed over adversity

I guess "Revenge of the Planet of the Apes" is actually a cautionary tale.

Quote:

A group of monkeys in a small town in India took "revenge" on the local dog population this month by throwing them off of the top of tall buildings and trees. It is reported that the monkeys have killed about 250 pups in the process and are now targeting villagers.

The monkeys, located in Majalgaon, India started the rampage after some of the dogs allegedly killed an infant monkey. News18 reported that when the monkeys see a dog approach, they catch them and throw them from a significant height to the ground.

In the neighboring village of Lavool the monkeys have fully eradicated all of the dogs. After all of the dogs were killed in the village, residents contacted forest department officials to catch the monkeys. But when officials attempted to catch the monkeys, they were unable to capture a single monkey.

Villagers believe the monkeys are taking revenge on the dogs, News18 reported. Now, villagers in Lavool are being chased by the monkeys, some have even been attacked.

According to Stephanie Poindexter, an assistant professor at SUNY Buffalo whose research focuses on primate behavioral ecology, said studies have shown that animals—primarily monkeys—can practice revenge.

I just bought one of those ready made burritos at a gas station about an hour ago

I said to the cashier - "I've bought 4 of these same burritos in the last 6 months" - I got back the classic blank stare

later today I'm planning to return an item to Home Depot

My wife gets mad at me because I do the same thing although it is not planned out. I was at the 7-11 buying a soda and told the clerk that a turkey sandwich is far superior to a ham sandwich. The clerk was speechless because i was buying neither and just had a root beer on the counter.

I seem to have similar experiences, with the roles partly reversed.

Set a beverage and a ready made burrito (I do like those yellow wrapper Don Miguel Egg & Sausage* things) on the counter and stare blankly when they offer a disloyalty card discount and delay the transaction while they stuff things in a bag I don't want.

Usually takes some prompting ("Excuse me, can I pay? Thanks.") to get them to realize I just want to pay and go.

I'm getting old - for a long time I tried to deny it - but I can't deny it anymore
yesterday, I woke up and I forgot all my logins and passwords to all my sites
and I forgot when and how to pay my bills
I sat at the computer for a long time searching and I got back the info - changed some of it and wrote it all down
It was scary
maybe it happened because I'm boozing more now, killing off a lot of brain cells, I don't drink anywhere near a lot - but more - I don't know
going to research how to slow down the memory loss if possible - any suggestions would be great

It's going to take a ridiculous amount of time to check all my logins and change all the passwords and make a spreadsheet about them and get a password manager to remember them and get my many browsers to update them. I'm sure there's 3-4 hundred logins I have to resurrect.

Even if you can't slow down the memory loss, coping strategies help.

As far as logins, using a password safe can help dramatically. I like Password Safe. Versions are available for most platforms. You can write down the password to the password safe in a secure location (like a sealed envelope) along with instructions, should someone else have the need to get to your accounts to make announcements or withdrawals.
May the cards fall in your favor.

My friend's doctor prescribed him vitamin B12 as a possible preventive for memory problems.

An ungraded copy of Action #1 reportedly sold for four and a half million dollars this week in a private sale. This is a bit unusual as most big sales in recent years have been through public auctions. Almost immediately, questions popped up all over the hobby as a famous artist supposedly had an open $10 million offer to buy this particular copy and a lower condition copy was recently valued at six million.
Incredibly, within hours claims were being made by "people in the know". It was part of a larger transaction,.... it was a tax dodge.... the money was a deposit for future ownership..... on and on.
The owner of the book now says it was one of his two under-copies that sold, not the copy the rumor said. The owner is a Dentist who started buying top-notch material in the late 1970s and his collection is near legendary. It is said that he has multiples of most of the key books, most of which are the top copies known to exist of the particular books. When I met him in the early 80s, he'd circle the smaller shows and buy only the cream of the cream. At a time when hundred dollar books were the exception, he would spend thousands. My friend bought a copy of the first Spiderman from a long time Archie artist. It was simply the nicest copy I'd ever seen. It was worth about $3500 at the time and my friend paid a small premium. The Dentist heard about the sale, inspected the book and offered double what it had just sold for. Inferior copies today sell for $750,000 and more.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction is supposed to make sense.

a lawsuit has been filed against Nevada's sex brothels naming the Governor and the Attorney General of Nevada
the suit claims that the brothels enable illegal sex trafficking and unconstitutional slavery
Nevada officials would not comment on the suit

I'd see a doctor. If it was as complete as you describe ... forgetting how to pay bills? sounds serious
the next time Dame Fortune toys with your heart, your soul and your wallet, raise your glass and praise her thus: “Thanks for nothing, you cold-hearted, evil, damnable, nefarious, low-life, malicious monster from Hell!”   She is, after all, stone deaf. ... Arnold Snyder

No, they're (almost certainly) not (just) checking your IP address.

Something else is going on. It could be something benign like you got this computer 1000 days ago, and the web cookies the financial websites issued at that time have all expired because they were designed to.
May the cards fall in your favor.

As far as I know, I have yet to have a negative financial event with my banking due to Internet use (unless it was something I did). Probably 95% of the time, I've only depended on Microsoft's basic anitviral ware even though I often read of suggestions to use outside anti-viral or malware. It's removed all the viruses it detected without any major interruption.

I have had to cancel some credit cards, but pretty sure that was due to outside use, not anyone breaking into the account.
There's no secret. Just know what you're talking about before you open your mouth.
