For those planning ahead, I think I'm going to not do the G2E meetup this year. Last year we had a very small turnout. I'm fine with having a dinner after the show one night but it won't be an official thing and there won't be a trivia challenge.

Since the founding of this site, I've been mentioning off and on the total eclipse on August 21 of this year. I'm planning to view it near Idaho Falls, ID. Some people have indicated interest in joining me. Just a reminder about that.

here's something I stumbled across, perhaps of interest:

[at a spot not quite clear to me] the Sun will actually rise while totally eclipsed. This is a sight few people - even veteran eclipse chasers - have seen, and from what we hear, it is quite uncanny

I think there is a region where this will be the case out in the North Pacific, roughly half way between Japan and Oregon, somewhere N.E. of Midway Atoll and N.W. of Hawaii. One such point that I found on the map is at coordinates 39º 39' 23.24" North and 171º 51' 32.87" West. According to info I found starting from your link, the experiences there (with times in UTC) will consist of:

1) Start of partial eclipse 15:55:33.2 hrs
2) Start of total eclipse 16:48:39.1 hrs
3) Sunrise 16:49 hrs
4) Maximum eclipse 16:49:04.6 hrs
5) End of total eclipse 16:49:30.1 hrs
6) End of partial eclipse 17:47:00.1 hrs

Of course, there is some ambiguity in 1) and 2), because the sun will then be "eclipsed" by both the earth and the moon. At that location in the ocean, totality will last for just under a minute, with sunrise occurring within that minute.

It suffices!

I was afraid they were talking about out in the ocean - although I guess some will go out in boats to see it.

The ideal spot might be where the eclipse has begun enough - just as the sun is fully above the horizon? But I don't know what makes it 'uncanny' other than having sunrise start and then stop, in a sense

So, assuming one is not fanatical enough to ship out, I think Oregon is no better than Idaho [wasn't sure till now], and a cloudless sky might trump all other considerations.

That's great, but so far we have MrV, PokerGrinder, and me saying we like that weekend, the Wizard saying "any date is fine" (and then recommending against a particular week), billryan saying "give me twenty minutes notice", and SOOPOO saying "I'm always a maybe for a Spring Fling." Before booking flights and hotel, I'd really like to get some feedback that there would be more than 3 or 4 of us that show up.

I'm a coin flip to show, however, if I do attend, there will most likely be others that will join me as well.

I haven't been following this but spring break week (Apr* 8-16) is not looking good for me. Otherwise, April is clear on my calendar.

Well "Shirley" he meant "Apr" instead of "Aug".

And I am commiting to the plan for a Spring Fling on 4/22/17. As noted in another thread, I plan on a nine-day trip to Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. I have my rooms booked for all but one night, but I haven't bought my plane tickets yet. Maybe I will get that done later on Sunday, but I've been hoping fares would go back down to where they were when I started looking.

If it turns out that the gathering is not that weekend, then I suspect that I will miss it.

Well I am planning a three week road trip around that date so if it's not that weekend than I will be missing it too. No plane tickets to buy for me but I've got a chip collecting trip mapped out for Nevada, California and one casino in Wyoming.

Warning, my rant turned longer than expected.

Airfare drives me crazy. It is such a cat and mouse game. I looked on 1 day and could get a delta flight for 7500 points per ticket. I didn't book it and went to do it 2 days later and when I put in 6 people it was now 20500 per ticket. Uggg. By accident I put in 1 person and it was 7500 per ticket. So I was able to book 5 at 7500 and 1 at 12000. Ok no big deal. So now I need a flight home. One day frontier is 139, next it is 99, then 179, then 159. Why does it really need to change every single day. I am also following southwest. 259 is the cheapest which is too much. After 2 weeks I stop following because it was not moving. Then while at my parents house we are talking about flights and deciding what to do. I accidentally open southwest when I meant to open frontier and a saturday flight is all of a sudden $124 and only 6000 points. Cheapest I have ever seen on southwesy for us. I have enough for 4 tickets so we buy 4 with points and pay 124 for the other 2. We wanted to fly out Friday but those have been high still. We booked the saturday flight in hopes that Friday would come down and we could switch them. However, friday and Saturday are now back up to close to 300.

It takes work and dedication to get a cheap flight.

Fyi, don't use Google flights or the travel places to check airfare. They often times don't have all the flights and miss some of the cheaper ones.
