The convention website lists the number of hotel rooms as:
148,402 in Sep 2010
147,972 in Oct 2010
145,694 in Nov 2010

Since presumably the count will add 3000 rooms for Dec 2010 for the Cosmopolitan, I was wondering why 3000 rooms were subtracted? Presumably at least 1000 of those rooms are for the Plaza downtown (which closed their hotel). Any idea on where the other 2000 came from?

Didn't the Riviera and/or Sahara close a few of their towers a while back, due to low demand?

The Sahara did. Recently the Plaza downtown closed the hotel for renovations. I believe Binion's also closed the hotel.

Binion's closing 345 rooms on December 14, 2009 was lost in the huge increase of rooms at city center. Sahara only has 1,720 rooms to begin with, and they closed two towers at the same time (Dec 2009). They didn't specify how many rooms were shut down, but best guess was only a few hundred rooms.

I did mention the Plaza in December 2010, but that is only about 1000 rooms. I was surpised to see a dip of almost 3000 rooms.

Riviera has about 2100 rooms total. I wonder how many they closed?

In their quarterrly report Tropicana announced that they would demolish approximately 100 hotel rooms dated 1957 to make a new entrance. These numbers are all pretty small, so it is still hard to see how the total came up to 3K, but I guess there was no massive closure (other than Plaza downtown closing 1K rooms).
