How does this add upp? I thought offering insurance and peeking was the same thing.

It's resolved after playing the hand out. Soaring Eagle used to deal this way before adding the peeking device.

Hi, Billybob.

Insurance is just a side bet on whether the dealer has a 10 under his ace. It has nothing to do with peeking. Peeking speeds up the game by ending the hand immediately upon a dealer blackjack saving time and allowing the casino to deal more hands per hour.

It's a very poor bet with over a 7% house edge in shoe games so never take it unless you are counting cards and have reached the index.

Yes, peeking is for the purpose of resolving the insurance bet. Note that in some casinos, peeking is not done and the hand is played out. If, after all player's hands are completed, the dealer turns over a blackjack, any splits or double downs that occurred are considered pushes (only the base bet is taken by the dealer).
