So, as far as I've understood, W2G's are filed to the IRS for tax purposes and CTR's are filed to the US treasury for fraud and whatnot.

Why are these forms filed even when you're in an Indian casino? I assume if you play in another country that a W2G or CTR wouldn't be sent to the USA IRS or Treasury...but why does it happen in Indian land? Since the winning aren't on US land, do taxes have to be paid on those wins?

I don't know how taxes work in other countries regarding gambling wins, but, I would have to assume that country would tax you -- not the US. ?

Indian casinos are in the US. "Sovereign Nation" is a figment of their imagination. If they were a sovereign nation they would not need a compact with the state in order to open a casino. That's what "sovereign" means -- you can do stuff like that without permission.

You're within U.S. borders, using U.S. dollars.

If the tribe issued their own currency, and you didn't feel a particular need to exchange it back to dollars on your way out, maybe you could get away from that.
May the cards fall in your favor.

It happens on Indian land because the rez is in the USA.

They're not sovereign nations: far from it.

True, they can adopt many of their own laws, and have their own tribal courts, but make no mistake about it: they must issue W-2G's.

Wish it weren't so.

All federal laws must be followed
All criminal laws must be followed
The casino exists only through a compact with the state. They can offer only the games that they state allows them to offer.

This is not "sovereign". They can take care of some civil matters themselves. That's it.

Well that is the problem isn't it. The tribe is issuing its own currency and trying to force the world to except it, for all debts public and private.

I can just envision the ads: "Wampum Whomp 'em!"

"More beads per bet."

and my personal favorite:

"Our blankets are NOT dosed with smallpox."
"What, me worry?"

If we're talking about chips (and TITO tickets, to a lesser extent), they don't even accept them themselves, for the most part*.

What currency do they issue?

*The cocktail waitresses do accept chips, but the gift shops, hotel, restaurants, and bars require you to convert back to U.S. money.
May the cards fall in your favor.

The funny thing is I've never had a problem paying restaurant bills with casino chips in Atlantic City.

Completely believable that any "real" casino would honor their own currency.
