This new mansion, dubbed Pensmore will be the fourth largest home in America at 14 bedrooms and 77K square feet. The owner is not a billionaire, and it is in a remote but very private location in the Ozarks, about 40 miles from the Springfield Missouri regional airport and 25 miles from an interstate. Nearest shopping and dining is 10 miles away. It has over a mile long driveway, but I don't know the size of the estate.

Most people who live in mansions want to live near something. Who on this forum would like to live in a mansion in the middle of nowhere with miles of hills?

Add a lake nearby, beter yet a private lake, and would that I had the money for something like that. I'd say close to Vegas, but then a lake of any kind is not realistic.

Peace, quiet, satellite TV and broadband, cell phone, what more could you possibly need?

I have no desire to live in a mansion anywhere, especially one that is 1.75 acres. I'd rather live in a "modest" million dollar home, where I don't need a staff to maintain the house. I think it's a little ironic that this guy wants to be secluded, but then he has to invite people into his house daily for cleaning, maintenance, yard work, etc.

As for not being near anything, I don't think that's a big deal; he would just hire people to get things. If I lived in the middle of nowhere, I would grocery shop once a week and I would order everything else off of Ebay or Amazon.

There is a tourist area not far away, known as Branson which features a lot of country acts. They have a lake. But casino gambling is illegal. You would have to drive about 4 hours to get to River city casino in St Louis.

Ah, then this tract by the Ozarks is in the vestibule of Hell? :)

If I recall correctly, in a Simpsons ep they describe Branson as "Vegas if it were run by Ned Flanders"

I should have said a secluded lake. Priavte lakes are rare and the land one is on would cost a bigger fortune. But a secluded one, or one with a secluded spot, are still plenty good. I don't like epople seeing me in a swim suit (don't ask)

I guess that it would have a lot of the same appeal as living on a private island, but without the frequent rain that island life entails. No beaches in Missouri, though (at least not real ones).

Better to have spare house than to need room later :)

What I don't like is the design. I don't get the American taste for slanted, shingled roofs and tiny windows, or wood construction either. I prefer glass and concrete with huge picture or panoramic windows. Think Frank Lloyd Wright.

William Randolph Hearst built a house in the middle of nowhere (San Simeon) that turned out quite nice. If I had the means, I would build remotely too. You don't have to worry about noisy neighbors or folks complaining that your remodel is ruining, "the neighborhood aesthetic". It leaves plenty of room for the helicopter in case I needed to get someplace in a hurry.

Yeah. but he wound up, bitter, lonely and he fought with his best friend. He also missed his sled.

No, wait. That wasn't that newspaper/media magnate :P

Anyway, I see from the photo Mr. Hearst also went in for slanted roofs and tiny windows. And what's that ugly Grecoroman pool or fountain in the lower left corner?

That's my point. If Mr. Hearst likes slanted roofs, tiny windows and "Grecoroman" pools and/or fountains he can can put them where ever he wants.

As an aside, the pools are one of the most amazing things about the property. They are surrounded by real sculptures from ancient Greece and Rome. Learn more here. I imagine it would have been like filling the Louvre with water, and backstroking around.

It's even uglier close up.

Look. it's one thing for a campy place like vegas to ape architectural styles for entertainment and decorative purposes, like Caesars Palace or Paris. It's quite another to do so seriously.

The Greeks and Romans, though, were gifted at sculpture, and remained largely unsurpassed until the Renaissance. I'm glad such masterpieces ahve been rpeserved, but a pool is not the place to display them, either for priavte or public viewing. A garden with scattered fountains would be much more pleasing, and more conductive to contemplating the various works.

Marble can take a lot, too, but if I owned any ancient sculptures I'd keep them in a temperature/humidity controlled room

Check real estate ownership in the surrounding area its most likely simply a different entity that owns the surrounding land for later development.

A good many ski resorts sell private condos so that privacy but not isolation is offered. Anyone who seeks only geographical remoteness usually has something to hide. Rich wives don't want to cook, they want to eat out. Teenage sons may enjoy hunting and fishing, but teenage daughters like to hunt a different type of prey. Ten miles ain't far to drive though.

Looks like its a corporate venture related to concrete wall formation. Is this a new technique. Aren't walls formed by dot-matrix printers these days? Printers on steroids perhaps but dot matrix printers that "build" a wall and also build the interior electrical wiring and internal copper pipes and then at the end "build" the layers of paint as well.

MrV has a good point, who needs over 70K square feet? The mansion pictured has only 35K square feet of living space and it has:

7 bedroom suites (each with a fireplace)
10 full baths, 6 half baths
billiards room with fireplace
double bridal staircase
14 seat home theater
14 fireplaces
2-story salon/ballroom with surrounding balcony, north and south staircases, and a catering kitchen
pub room
library
dining room behind library with fireplace
upstairs office
master suite with his and hers closets, sitting room, and large master bath
5 kitchens
2 separate garages that can hold 8 cars each
living room
2 guest apartments above each garage complete with bedroom, kitchen, and living room conservatory
exercise room
game room with card table
lake room with fireplace and kitchen
workshop
numerous storage rooms

Of course, the British built some homes over 100K square feet.

The owner of the mansion is CEO of TF Concrete Forming Systems, so the home does double duty as a very elaborate showpiece for his corporation. He won't reveal what he paid for the 500 acres or even the expected total cost of the mansion because he doesn't want to distract from the sales pitch.

The energy efficiency is one part of the pitch, but equally important is its ability to withstand tornadoes and hurricanes.

Another mansion in the middle of nowhere. This time in the fading industrial city of Erie Pennsylvania. It was actually built 20 years ago. but never photographed. The couple who owned the place died in a plane crash.

Due to the remote location, this home is only $19.5 million. It consists of multiple pods connected by underground tunnels that you can scoot through (or ride golf carts). It comes with a marina, and the only indoor helipad I've ever seen.

The white bricks are unique. He had them made, and literally smashed the molds afterwards. Oddly enough he made most of his money because of the invention of the drop ceiling.

Unlike the mansion in the Ozarks, it is about 40 driving miles to Cleveland, or 75 helicopter miles to Detroit. So it might not be quite in the middle of nowhere.

My reaction at first glance at the photo was that it would take one heck of a daredevil pilot to land in that spot. Wouldn't take much of a gust to smash the craft into the walls.

I was curious enough to look up the place on Google Maps. (Thanks for the coordinates, Frank.) It does look as if there is a paved (asphalt?) pad with a driveway (tow way?) into a garage/hangar structure at the southwest corner of the facility, near the "house" automobile parking area, as opposed to the "marina" automobile parking area. Must be a white ceiling in the hangar, rather than open top as it appears in the photo.

If you are on a thousand dollar budget (including travel), rent a truck and drive down to Michoacan, Mexico. They specialize in furniture. You can invest in a piece of furniture like this for a fraction of what it costs in the USA. Your truck will be searched every time you cross a state line in Mexico, but at the USA border you simply say it artisan crafts. There is no tax on artisan crafts when you come into the USA, regardless of how much you spend.

You can try telling the federales in Mexico "artesenia" which slows them down a little. But little gifts help speed them on their way.

If you have no budget problems, I like this model.

Here is the view from a place in Hope Ranch for only $4 million, but it hardly qualifies as a mansion. Built 1958, 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath, 3,362 square feet, 1.2 acres. Address is 4163 Marina Dr Hope Ranch, CA 93110.

In contrast, if you are looking for waterfront views, here is a place for $500 thousand.

Built 2008, 4 bedroom, 5 bath, 5,050 sq feet, gated community, 4 car garage.
Of course the waterfront is along the Detroit river.

Check-out the realtor's description, particularly the last sentence !
And how often do you hear "stark lunar landscape" as a selling
point in a description ?

I'm not sure this one falls into the "mansion" category. Maybe
the "villain's secret lair" category.

And I apoligize in advance if this is your home !

Sited upon small volcanic cone in the high desert midway between Las Vegas & Los Angeles, this 60-acre retreat seems to cap the mountain top with its dome-like roof: Concrete and truss beams form its dome allowing the interior to embrace 360 degrees of stark, strong almost lunar landscape. Main house of two bedrooms, 2 baths and open entertaining areas. Guest house of one bedroom and bath, lake, and ultimate privacy. Truly one of a kind property in the most impressive of settings.

Great place for a sun-worshiping nudist colony or a Hippie Retreat run by Claude who uses it as a way stop for illegal aliens en route to Bakersfield.

I think nudity and sun-worshiping go hand in hand. I never heard of a nudist resort in a rainy part of the world.

This mansion is being sold for $12 million off of Florida keys near city of Marathon

99 Ocean East Drive Marathon, Fl 33050, Florida
24° 41.234'N 81° 4.471'W

As they bought the home in 1995 for $715K they must be dreaming if they think they can get $12 million

==================
If that is too much, there is a 40 year old fixer upper for sale only 450 yards away, but you can drive to it. Two bedroom, 1 bath, 1400 sq ft stilt house (1/4 acre) for $1.4 million.

I would assume that sand and sun are more common but rain forests and nudity are not unheard of.

British Columbia, Costa Rica, Australia all have rain forests with nudist resorts. The Hoh Rainforest in Washington State used to have one.
