I did a quick search and found a link at the Syracuse school paper.
Just proves the truth of the old adage: "The more things change, the more they stay the same."
I was a frat rat.
We didn't do the stuff they did, but some of our initiation rites were pretty weird.
But nothing was as strange as Masonry, with the threat of having one's throat cut from ear to ear for disclosing Masonic secrets.

My dad was a Mason. I think he was 42nd degree. I carry his punched penny.
I think.you have to be invited/sponsored by a current Mason. I could be wrong. It's men only, last I knew, (there's a women's division), and people really don't talk about it, but, well....the internet, you know.

My grandfather was a Grand Master with his Lodge. I always got the impression that it was just a bunch of old guys doing charitable stuff for the community on an anonymous basis, and that is the reason for the secrecy. I have boxes and boxes of masonic documents and trinkets that he left when he passed, none of it is very interesting.

I never joined a Frat in college.
I had a solid group of friends, and I didn't even have to pay them $500/semester and get spanked to be friends.

Ah yes, the tired old "pay for friends and get spanked" cliche. I don't comment on nuclear physics because I don't know anything about it. I'd suggest the same.

And they all say he same thing to somehow justify paying thousands of dollars to get hazed and drink in something that resembles a crack house.
