Mine worked in France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium & The Netherlands last summer. Easier if you can get WiFi. Gotta check with your cell provider.

Mine has worked in Argentina, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Australia, New Zealand, England, and Malta. I can't think of anywhere it hasn't worked. Be prepared to pay up the wazoo, even with the international plan.

Mine worked in Costa Rica, Mexico, and Belize and it was reasonable with the Int'l plan, only about $30 a month but for very limited data (2 GB?) and unlimited texting. Calls would have been very expensive.

Does the IPhone 6 work anywhere?
But in seriousness,
It's all about your provider.
Just pop in a local prepaid SIM card for a few bucks when you enter a new country, it's much cheaper than an international plan.

It will mostly work worldwide if you've got the GSM version.

Definitely get a local SIM card if that's an option, or buy a disposable phone locally.
Expect a dollar a minute or more, plus data charges, otherwise.

May the cards fall in your favor.

If you're not staying long enough to justify a new cell plan, you can have pretty much all your phone functions if you have wi-fi. iMessage and FaceTime work for calls and texts (FaceTime has an audio only option). Or you can use third party apps like GroupMe and TextPlus for texting and calling.
