I only buy batteries at dollar tree. Everything there is $1. They may die quicker but for 1/12 price I take the chance.
Lately I have been getting free batteries from Harbor Freight. They put coupons in the paper for free items with no purchase. I am not too ashamed to walk in for free batteries without buying anything.

That brings back memories of Tandys (Radio Shack) in the UK. They used to give away a torch that took 5 D cells and their diaries had a free battery per month coupon. The torches seldom lasted as long as the batteries and that wasn't long.
I remember as a school project we opened up an assortment of D cells of different price and quality. Many were half empty. It seems that the manufacturers put more and more air in them and decrease capacity over time before introducing some super new high capacity version at twice the price.

The freebies at Harbor Freight are fun. Never tried the batteries as the flashlights they give out have batteries that do not last long.
I just paid $2? for a 9V at a C-Store because I needed it right then. Thought I was paying a lot, I guess not.
AAA, AA, D, got a bunch of them.
The initial cost was high but not buying a battery in 5 years, I'm probably now getting the savings.
Also got 2 big car sized deep discharge rechargeable batteries for my RV.

Think you got hosed. 4 pack of duracells $12.97 Canadian on Amazon. Normal price in the stores in my small town is C$4.99 for 1 and usually someone has them on sale for less.
But still though, kinda makes me mad (I don't know why!), that the batteries are so damned expensive. Especially at WalMart where everything is supposed to be super cheap.

That sounds about right for lithium, but it sounds really expensive for alkaline.
There are different kinds of battery chemistries, with different costs and different intended uses.
Everything seems to be getting more expensive.

We tried to go this route but one of us threw them away forgetting that they were rechargeable. I blame her and she blames me, we all know who did it and we all know who is taking the blame.
Lesson learned, just get more rechargeables. Walmart always has them on sale.
Anyone with kids, I assume rechargeables are a must.

Unfortunately when something goes missing in my place, it really is my fault. She claims I never put stuff in the right spot. Sure I do since I have 3 junk drawers.

He probably bought lithium ones or some other high end battery. If he posts a picture I'm willing to bet they're not standard duracells.

I didn't buy the expensive ones. i bought one 9V RAYOVAC battery. But a two pack of 9V Duracells was 11.97.
This is at the Walmart (on Serene / Eastern) in Las Vegas / Henderson.

Not if you buy a good smoke detector. I just bought a set that are good for 10 years or so, you have to activate them but after that good to go.
And some of that is why batteries now cost so much. You do not need to replace them as often, and unless you have kids with toys, how many things really burn through them anymore? My remotes have gone a year or more now. I do replace the Chinese Cheapos with real batteries in the free flashlights from Harbor Freight. I keep emergency flashlights in pretty much every room as well as my car and work bag. But now they have a better, still free light that has not used any yet.
I chalk it up to better quality, for once.

You mentioned remotes: I've many of them, they all require batteries.
Most of my watches require batteries, except for my Swiss self-winders.
Smoke detectors and CO detectors.
Flashlights.
Speaking of flashlights, while I still have a few clunky old style ones that use "D" batteries, I've discovered the satisfaction of owning high quality LED flashlights.
Good grief, they are many, many times better than the old style ones.
Here's my favorite light: Surefire E2D Led Ultra Defender .
It uses two 123A Lithium batteries; I bought a small box of them from Surefire when I ordered the light.
The light is absolutely amazing; I cannot think of another product where opting to spend more yielded such an improvement in quality and performance.
As an added bonus: it has a "crenelated strike bezel" so I can also use it as a weapon in self defense.
