The Florida gun law is weird. Anybody can buy a gun, just about anybody, and conceal it on their person but they can't open carry it. You can't have a holster on your waist and carry the gun so other people can see it. In Michigan it's the exact opposite. If I have a licensed firearm I can open carry it anywhere; to conceal carry it I need a special license. The Florida law is kind of scary, just about anybody can carry a gun down there and you don't know who has one and who doesn't if you're with law enforcement.

new cars are spying on the occupants

from the article:

"Popular global brands including BMW, Ford, Toyota, Tesla, Kia, and Subaru were found to collect "deeply personal data" on their users, such as immigration status, race, facial expressions, weight, health and genetic information, and where you drive. Mozilla's researchers found that data is being gathered by a combination of sensors, microphones, and cameras; as well as the car's app, which provides a gateway to information on your phone; and third-party apps like Sirius XM and Google Maps.

And worse, we don't know what car companies are doing with this information. Of the brands surveyed, 84 percent said that they can share your personal data with service providers, data brokers, and other businesses; while 76 percent said that they can sell your personal data. An additional 56 percent also said that they can share information with government or law enforcement agencies with something as simple as a breezy "informal request."

the research project found Nissan to be the worst offender; the company admits to collecting a wide range of information in its privacy policy including 𝙨𝙚𝙭𝙪𝙖𝙡 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙩𝙮, health diagnosis data, and genetic data. However, it doesn't say exactly how it collects this information.

Other brands that fared poorly include Volkswagen, Kia, Toyota, and Mercedes-Benz. The latter brand even manufactures certain models with TikTok pre-installed—an app that has likewise raised concerns about data security and privacy."

Devil's advocate theory: I bet car companies don't care about your info at all. They were probably like, "It would be cool if people could connect their phones to their car," and the company lawyers were like, "Oh, my god, that would be a legal nightmare, you can't do that...." and the execs were like, "Well...what if we just disclose to everyone that everything they do on their phone might be accessible to us," and the lawyers said, "Yeah, that would be okay."

So now car companies have all this info they don't give a crap about sitting on a server somewhere, and some junior VP trying to get a promotion says, "There are companies that buy all this crap, I bet we could make some money with this info we legally own." Then some shady company buys all your personal info, and uses it to make targeted ads that 99.9999% of people just ignore anyway.

needed to contact Social Security for an issue re my spouse 2 days ago
they do not offer online service for many issues

could not reach them by phone - stayed on the line over 1 hour
an automated message played - this was the message:

"We apologize for the delay. There are over 50 million people on Social Security"

and at any given time prolly 15,000 plus are calling in - and many of them are prolly confused elderly people taking up a lot of time when they do get on

so we went to the local office yesterday when it opened at 9 a.m. - our only choice - we could not make an appointment

finally got to see somebody 4.5 hours later

omg - I'm praying I never have another issue with s.s.

My last adventure with SSA went something like:
- Check website. This matter cannot be handled on the website.
- Call telephone hotline. Every 75 seconds on hold, be reminded that my call is important to them, and that many matters can be handled on the website. (URL gets slowly spelled out.) Be advised that I may continue to hold for the next available agent.

- Get upset, decide to chuck it all and go to the office. (Closed for lunch.)
- After lunch, finally talk with someone. (I have to bend over to try to hear through the slot in the barrier window.)
- 2 minutes later, forms are filled out.
- Response arrives by mail in just 2 business weeks.
May the cards fall in your favor.

I just watched a strange video from the Conan Obrian show with now-convicted rapists Danny Masterson. In it, Masterson imitates himself weirdly and asks if you want to touch his balls? Conan is taken aback and after another exchange seems to switch subjects but adds- I've heard about you. You'll be caught soon, and Masterson replies- I will.
I don't know how to post videos here.

"Dumb Money"

I love it - a movie lampooning Wall Street - the true story of when GameStop soared

At its height, on January 28, the short squeeze caused the retailer's stock price to reach a pre-market value of over US$500 per share ($125 split-adjusted), nearly 30 times the $17.25 valuation at the beginning of the month______________(-:\

It tells the bizarre true story of small investors — a nurse, college students, a YouTube personality known as Roaring Kitty — who created a Wall Street frenzy over the troubled video game retailer GameStop during the pandemic. Determined to teach professional investors a lesson, and hopefully get rich in the process, they pushed GameStop shares to a stratospheric level in early 2021, for a time putting the squeeze on sophisticated hedge funds that had bet that GameStop shares would fall.

Where is the fun in that? Apparently, forum members continue their collective tirades against EB's methods, but blocking seems to be never considered.

Determined to teach professional investors a lesson, and hopefully get rich in the process, they pushed GameStop shares to a stratospheric level in early 2021, for a time putting the squeeze on sophisticated hedge funds that had bet that GameStop shares would fall.

lilredrooster,

For an interesting book on this topic, I would suggest this:
Endgame: An Insurgency on Wall Street by Sheelah Kolhatkar.

The police search is not looking all that good so far. Seems odd to me, dogs can't track him at least to a very small search area.

they've closed schools in some parts of PA because they can't find an escaped killer
I don't recall this ever happening before
they've been looking for him for almost a week
he's wanted for murder in Brazil too
scary guy

they still haven't caught him - it's been well over a week
he's been front page news
he changed his appearance, and stole a vehicle
now they say he's 40 miles away from where he escaped and where they were looking

and they say he now has a gun

They caught the fugitive.

They need to put a cone on his head this time. (he's a small guy and can squeeze through narrow spaces)

He'll be really sorry if they decide to send him to Super Max prison. I don't think they will.

I don't think he's a federal prisoner.

He was convicted of murder and serving a life sentence. On top of that, he's in the country illegally and is still wanted for murder in Brazil.

Dude has nothing to lose. It's no wonder he escaped, but considering his past, it seems odd he was only in a medium security jail to begin with.

I have been told not to start anymore gambling threads and to just use the ones I already have. So I dug up one from the past and I'm posting in that one. If you're wondering why it's there that's the reason.

Fugitive Calvalcante said he was almost stepped on by law enforcement officers 3 different times, they came so close to finding him. His final escape plan was to use the rifle he stole to carjack a vehicle and head to Canada.

Dog named "Yoda" found him. "“Do or do not. There is no try.”

Didn't they make a film about that?
I'm guessing Mayim Bialik does not get offered the host position.

paranormal activity_________?

a shape shifter or a ghost seems to walk thru iron gates in the Philippines freaking out security personnel reviewing the cctv

I watched it several times - at first I thought he might be skinny enough (he's very thin) to slip thru the bars if he turned to the side
but I saw that that is not what happened

in a different YT vid a guy analyzed this to see if it's fake and he could not find evidence of fakery
this was featured on the Travel Channel - they only seem to now travel to paranormal hotspots

That one seems easily explained.... The gate opens in the middle. The left side was probably swung open a little bit towards the camera, just enough for a person to walk through, but from the security camera angle it still looks closed. The guy walks down the sidewalk from the left and through opening, then turns to walk up the path towards the camera. It only looks like he's walking "through" the bars because the camera quality is so bad and it's at night.

Yes he was, he passes right by it. If I could somehow post a drawing or illustration of what I'm saying it would make sense.

EDIT: Drawing of what it would look like overhead.

Green is the camera. Red is the guy's path. The gate is just barely open enough for him to squeeze through then turn and walk towards the camera.

no

I blew it up and took a screenshot - here it is - exactly where he came in - a microsecond after this he is on the other side of the gate

the gate is closed and there are 2 bars to the right of his right shoulder

nowhere close to the middle - and he was never close to the middle when coming in

I've watched this now dozens of times stopping and starting it as he enters past the gate
