I was 18 when I left and didn't realize how special it was there until I had been away for 5 years. At 18, as a single white free male, certain things are not as important as others. Going to Vegas was very exciting at the time. No regrets, hopefully, I will take the time to go visit more and even buy something there at some point.

No reason not to take a week or 2 and enjoy it if it makes you happy. The world you walk away from will still be there when you get back.

Sounds easy to say, but the harder decision is to defend not doing it.

I didn't want to discourage GWAE, as the boy has a penchant for breaking spirits. He caught 60 Saturday, his try for a 100ct weekend wraps up tomorrow. He's over the moon. I'm jealous as s@#$ lol

One thing I did catch was my new favorite swamp pic. One more to push Axel home...

It's ok, I used to fish every weekend from a boat on a small lake. We would either troll or just sit still depending on how we felt. Would catch non stop. That is a completely different animal than fishing a crick after a storm. I had no idea what I was doing . I did lose a bunch of setups which made me sad.

SOOPOO had a HOLE IN ONE today.
Arrowhead Golf Course, Akron, NY
8th hole. 184 yards.
5 wood.

2nd one lifetime.

A hole in one is a little bit skill and a lot of luck. But for that one hole I was the best golfer in the world at that moment.

I won $3 from my friends on that hole, but had to buy drinks after....... Axel would say it was - EV!

Bowling a perfect game requires an extremely high level of skill in bowling. I have witnessed Holes In One by bad golfers who hit a single lucky shot. I would guess there are top level bowlers who have had dozens of perfect games. And I would have nearly zero chance. My personal high for consecutive strikes is 4, done decades ago.

I had 3 witnesses. Plus perhaps the group on an adjacent green who heard the screams.... My first one was with a group of 24 golfers... and the geography of the hole had 16 of my friends as witnesses.....

Caddied a bit in high school. Witnessed two hole in one's. The first was an easy par 3 over a small pond, on the 18th.
The second one was weird. All six of :-( four golfers and two caddies ) lost sight of the ball. We were looking all over for it about thirty yards from the green. Guy played another ball but when we got to the hole, his was in it. I don't know if it counted. No one asked me to witness either. Never had or seen one in a foursome I was in.

I got a golf ball stuck up in a tree if that counts for anything.

Once, I was trying to do a fancy shot like you see the pros shooting between trees. However, I broke my club on the tree instead of hitting the ball.

My favorite shot though, was hitting the ball with a 3 wood about 50 yards from the green into hurricane winds, and watching it return like a boomerang onto the green very close to the hole, where it promptly was blown off rolling all the way.)

(wasn't; really a hurricane yet)

There was definitely a lot of nerves. I normally throw around 17 mph with a fairly large hook to the 3 board. On that shot I did the opposite of what people do. Normally in a pressure shot they will speed up but I slowed down and the ball shot through the middle. I left a 4,7,8, 6, 10 split. I was so mad.

The 297 was in the same season about 8 weeks later. I had the 295 in my head and I wasnt really nervous and was throwing a really good ball. This was the 3rd game and I ended up with a 804 series. Last ball was thrown too hard and left the 1,2,10. Sigh. Didnt even hit the head pin.

Owell haven't been in a league for a few years now so my shot at 300 is probably gone. I have many 290's (spare in the first and 11 to end the game for those that dont know bowling)

In FL, you can legally fish without a license through the "cane pole exemption."

You can't use a reel (hence the "cane pole" part), and you can only do so in your county of residence.

Absolutely. When I was like 16 or 17 I got a ticket in Washington state (IIRC it was hundreds of dollars). Of couse, I didn't take care of it or go to court(who has time and willingness for that kinda crap at that age?) and so they sent out an FTA bench warrant for me, they just tossed it in with the 10 other various FTA'S I had at the time.

DEC is not far under USPS concerning agencies you do not want to eff with, especially us border people. I've seen rape and murder charges less harsh than plunking a bear in May or dragging a wet line across an invisible line.

Even the civil penalties...$100 per poached fish adds up when you're nabbing 30 with every throw. Some Chinese nationals just got banged here with 3,100 illegal fish. Some of my own exploits would relieve me of my gear and my boat if the puddle patrol got a wild hair.

That said, every single warden I've contacted bar none has been an exemplary individual. Dunno if it's cuz two armed guys in the woods makes for manners, but in all my many violations, I've not been so much as scolded let alone charged.

NYSPark Police, on the other hand...

Color me jealous.

I only have one hole in one with a witness and that occurred on a Par 3 course, 140 yard hole though, so I guess it’s reasonable. Slightly downhill, so I usually would just hit a little punch off the tee and try to roll it onto the green, give it a chance, and it paid off once.

One other time, I may have aced a (really) short Par 4, but I had no witnesses. I also say, “May have,” because I couldn’t find my ball, there was a ball in the cup, but I didn’t think I was hitting a Pinnacle. I didn’t know what to do with that, so I decided just to replay the hole because nobody was behind me. Four-putted a Triple Bogey, definitely remember that.

My best bowling game, I think, was a 220-something. I had eight strikes, but three open frames, including the tenth after two strikes. It wasn’t the pressure, the fourth was an open frame, so it’s not like I believed I was working on a 300.

EDIT: I think it may have been nine strikes...I’m sure three open frames and two strikes in the tenth, so I guess that’s nine strikes.

I had the same thing happen on a par 4 (except for it being in the cup). I hit a monster shot on a long par 4. It rocketed off a cart path and went over the little hill where we couldn't see the ball. I looked for a while and dropped one. Ended up taking 3 more shots to get to the green and when we got there, there was a ball inches from the pin. We didn't know what to do but since we were playing for money the other 2 decided I was keeping my 6.

So in 16 years, it's gone up 65%. Stocks have gone up 400% since then. 150K in 2003 would have grown to about 600K. Even if you had been paying $1,000 a month for rent, you'd have about $400,000 in cash with no debt. You have something worth 242K if you can get that price. Expect a bit less, minus whatever you still owe. How many years are left on your mortgage?
As you said, you did ok. But you could have done better. Had you rented until now under the circumstances described, you could buy your house today for cash and have $150,000 in the bank, or hopefully invested in things that will grow.
Real estate can be a great way to build wealth. Just not a single family home, bought to live in.

On the flip side

Few years ago: Was buying my first fishing license to go fishing for my first time since I was a kid. Guy at the counter of the store asked for my license, I gave my out-of-state license to him, he printed me a resident license even though I lived out of state. I didn’t correct him as I thought he was saving me money.

3 years later... I come home from a 3 week vacation/get mail to find that not only did I miss a chance to explain what happened to the warden, but also missed a court appearance for the matter. Was about $300-500 fine, (can’t remember exactly)... because I got the wrong license. Tried explaining it to the warden, he simply didn’t care, screw that guy. I was just too late. Serves me right for trying to just do it legally.

TLDR: Don’t buy a fishing license unless you’re going fishing more than once that year. It’s a bad bet/waste of money.
$1700, 18, 19, 1920, 40, 60,... :/ Thx 'Do it again'. I'll try

How did they know you got the wrong license? How would you even be at fault when it was the clerk's job to make sure you got the right one? How would you know any better if you're from out of state? If I went to another state and said, "I need a fishing license," I would just trust the clerk knew what he was doing to make sure I was getting the proper license. And why did they not mention it to you until three years later? This just reeks of some kind of corrupt game warden shenanigans... I wouldn't be surprised if the store clerks get kickbacks for giving people the wrong license.

I really don’t know about that conspiracy but regardless I was pretty upset. Not sure about other states wardens, maybe Face has a down to earth one, but he certainly doesn’t have a lenient reputation for where I’m talking about.

Or You could rent and have something now.
I can't think of many worse investments than buying a house in Vegas. Maybe buying a condo in Vegas.

In my neighborhood it would cost about $600 a month more to rent my house than the mortgage that I pay. In that circumstance I don't think it would be prudent to rent.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

Texas is notorious for the price difference between a residency license and foreign license, enforcement is a revenue source.

Renting is definitely more expensive than a mortgage where I live, too.

I think, in general, in LCOL or MCOL areas it's cheaper to buy, but in HCOL areas it's cheaper to rent.

What was the beginning of the end of human history? I think it began with the loss of all reason and real purpose.

Bunch of false heros lined up to get their vanity card punched. If you can't climb it without a Sherpa you have no business there. When are they going to open the Sherpa Taco Shack on the South Summit? Probably do a McDonald's at the base of the Hillary Step as well.

Would something like this micro inspection camera help you, instead of tearing up the floor and walls? Leaks are probably at a connection point, unless you've driven nails/screws into the area lately.

You're not thinking very hard.

I'm sure you might find some. I can't think of anything I would invest in that has negative appreciation for the past decade.
Half the mortgages in many Vegas zip codes are well under water. If you are an experienced flipper, or looking for investment property, it's one thing, but buying a single family home as a residence in this Valley is a.crapshoot. Not an investment.
Real estate on Long Island has gone up something like 47 of the last 50 years. Since Vegas began to mature in the early 80s, it's been very cyclical. I don't see it improving. Others do. Is anyone here certain a house bought today for $200,000 will sell for more in five years?
Ten years?
If your financial advisor suggested you tie up your main assets in a stock whose track record for the last forty years was both choppy and well below the industry norm, would you sign on for a thirty year ride?
The benefits of home ownership are overstated and the downside ignored. In addition to a mortgage, you have the cost of thirty years of maintenance to look forward to. How many washers, dryers, fridges, air conditioners, stoves and dishwashers will need replacement?
Condos are worse. My complex has spent a fortune on our pools, and spent $250,000 on a clubhouse no one uses. In a condo, those would both be special assessments.
Anyone want to talk about HOAs? Only in America do people pay to surrender their civil liberties.
Rant over.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction is supposed to make sense.
