Quote: kewljBut, he has committed no crime. Being racist and stupid is not a crime. The idea that he should be forced to sell his personal property just seems wrong. The way this should play out in my mind, is the same as if he owned a restaurant, or other business. Those offended can decide to boycott his business.
No, he has not committed a crime but he owns a franchise and with that he must adhere to their rules which he agreed to.
Do you think McDonald's or one of the other large franchises would allow an owner to continue to represent them if they started displaying racist or antisemitic propaganda in their stores?

I must have missed the "No Blacks Allowed" signs in front of Staples Center.
Quote: Lemieux66I'm just annoyed that if a black owner said the exact same thing about white fans it would get 2 minutes on SportsCenter and then be mostly forgotten about. It's pathetic.
Do you mean like if the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats came out and said he grew up racist and hated white people. That would never happen. Lol
Quote: ams288Does that make what he said okay??? Should he still be allowed to own an NBA team?
Although I don't care for what Sterling believes, I need to ask where we draw the line? For example, I heard Stephen A. Smith talking about some of the NFL players tweeting regarding the gay guy that got drafted and he seemed to be saying that he thought that it was OK and that he understood. So again I ask, where is the line drawn? It's OK to bash the gay guy but not blacks?

But that is NOT what Sterling did. He expressed an opinion in the privacy of his own home. He did not make a public comment or display. There is a difference.
Quote: kewljI really am growing more appalled with this story each day. There is a mob mentality involved and the NBA appears to have a constitution and control that rivals most dictatorship countries, allowed to just take property away from someone any time they want. That is not an American concept.
It's a contract with specific requirements and penalties which might look like a bad deal to some, but you sign on a dotted line (or whatever) That's American.
He can of course, go to court over some violation of it, if there is one.

Exactly. But hey, he's Air Jordan so it's all good.
Quote: kewljbecause I saw nothing but a confused old man floundering around, not making much sense.
I didn't see the interview, but I agree, someone that old could be in some state of mental deterioration. The fact that he threw a lot more money at the woman involved than was probably necessary makes me suspect he was not as sharp as he once probably was. If you can't find a similar service (girl Friday, mistress?) for less than that, prices are truly more inflated than I thought.
Quote: kewljPlus, it was revealed yesterday that two different law enforcement agencies are looking into whether it was legal, under California laws, for the girl to release the tape and whether charges should be brought against her. It could turn out that the man is legally the victim, here. If it were a court of law that would be evidence that couldn't be used.
And that is basically my whole real issue with this case. If this man had held a press conference or taken to a podium or even an interview in his official capacity of representing the Clippers and/or NBA, I could see more of an issue. But a private conversation, in the privacy of his own home.....that doesn't work the same way for me. The man had a certain expectation of privacy which has been violated. And again, the important issue here is that no crime was committed. It is not illegal to be ignorant and stupid, ESPECIALLY in the privacy of your own home.
For the most part I agree with you, and I hope the girl has charges brought against her if turns out she violated the law.
It's frighting to think of the implications of private conversations that go public. But just because no crime was committed and we all should have an expectation of privacy in our own home, doesn't change the fact that the comments are now in the public domain. Should the NBA and the other 29 owners just ignore it? I don't think they have the luxury to do that when one of their own club members racist comments and attitude is bad for business. It's always about the money, and in this case, Sterling keeping the team is costing the NBA as a whole.
As an aside, I think the NBA will have a much more difficult time forcing the sale than most people believe.
Quote: MidwestAPFor the most part I agree with you, and I hope the girl has charges brought against her if turns out she violated the law.
She maintains that she is not the one who released the tape. And TMZ has never said where they initially got it from. So it'll be interesting to see what happens...
Quote: ams288And TMZ has never said where they initially got it from.
I think a lot of the gossip sites will take anonymous submissions, so they may not even know. (although they probably have a good guess like everyone)

I'm sure they know.
TMZ isn't your typical gossip site as it appears to be. They have higher standards than you would think in regards to when they publish big news like this.
They sat on the tape for days before they released it. They reached out to Sterling's camp first and were ignored.
I'm sure they got the go ahead from their legal department first before they released the audio.

No doubt. They probably pay for exclusivity too, which would require some more formal agreement. Although, if there were less legal ramifications, such as just a silly celeb shot doing nothing much, they may not need to know much of anything about who sent it.
Quote: kewljThis was pretty much my thoughts as well. There is some question about the man's mental state. Anderson Cooper said, he didn't see any issue and would not have continued if he thought there were any. I am wondering if Anderson was really being objective, because I saw nothing but a confused old man floundering around, not making much sense.

As, I said, in another threat (or maybe earlier in this one, I didn't check), it pains me to defend this jackass. But, he has committed no crime. Being racist and stupid is not a crime. The idea that he should be forced to sell his personal property just seems wrong. The way this should play out in my mind, is the same as if he owned a restaurant, or other business. +1. Well said, kewlj. I would add that (and I think you did in a later post, too) it's very questionable that he was having a private conversation in his home and it ended up broadcast everywhere without his knowledge or permission for the recording.

I second that!
Quote: GreasyjohnI second that!
So you're saying that he willfully and gladly wanted news that would crush him to leak? If so, he's as nuts as people theorize.
Think about all those high school teacher former porn stars you hear about getting fired once the past comes out and everyone knows. You say you shouldn't have recorded it, you can go make more tapes, but you can't teach here.
Both these case types gambled on the consequences, and the consequences belong on their shoulders for nothing could happen without their actions.
Quote: onenickelmiracleOnce something is public domain, the cat can't go back into the bag. Sterling might have a case against the woman or someone else who made the tape public, but those are separate things.

For me, that example is not analogous because the porn stars were consenting to the "exposure" and signing waivers. Donald Sterling was in his living room having a "private" conversation, unaware it would ever be heard by anyone but his "girlfriend". Privacy issue should trump political correctness of statements. Think what you like about him, but he's been violated.
His case would be against whoever violated his rights if they exist. You might have these rights against the government, but the NBA and the sponsors don't have any obligation to him. You can say or do anything you want, but if you care who knows, you have to protect your secrets and it's your responsibility. Privacy really only exists inside the mind. The way everyone lies now a days, there should be more people Richard Nixoning all over.Quote: beachbumbabsFor me, that example is not analogous because the porn stars were consenting to the "exposure" and signing waivers. I don't like racists due to the fact that I grew up in South Africa but what you guys are saying about his privacy is spot on. The guy made comments to his girlfriend in the privacy of his own home and somehow, between the two of them, it leaked out to the rags......I wonder who could have been the one doing the leaking????
She is some piece of work. Apparently been arrested 3 times under 3 different aliases (and here you guys thought V. Stiviano was her real name :) ). She was involved in a car crash earlier this week where she rear ended another dude in her "Ferrari present" and had the nerve to blame the dude?!!?!?!? (everyone with half a brain knows the back/behind/rear person is al fault....ALWAYS!!!!)
She was hanging around waiting for the perfect moment to strike and when she get her grubby mitts on this piece of info, she jumped on it like white on rice (pardon the analogy slip).
She deserves to get Herpes Simplex (at the very least) or perhaps genital warts!!!! I can't stand free loaders, much less people who are freeloaders AND money grubbers!!!
Hope she isn't a member here :)
Quote: BuzzardGee, I hope the NFL bars that racist bastard from any REDSKINS game !

Redskin is a racial descriptor of disputed origin for Native Americans. "usually offensive", "disparaging", "insulting", "taboo" and is avoided in public usage with the exception of its continued use as a name for sports teams.
Pedophiles think they are doing the kids a favor. Change the name. Hey every time they move a franchise they usually change the name. Except for that asshole Robert Irsay.

The interesting twist I've heard to this is even if he manages to somehow retain team ownership the new interview could be used against him because he did that of his own free will, and apparently some of this was not much better than what he originally said.
So, if they were going on the basis of what he said before, they can again, if they have some standing to do so.
Interesting idea. Anyone know how to contact Sterling? I want to borrow some money from him.Quote: rxwineThe interesting twist I've heard to this is even if he manages to somehow retain team ownership the new interview could be used against him because he did that of his own free will, and apparently some of this was not much better than what he originally said.

Look for a press conference tomorrow, announcing Donald as the new owner of the REDSKINS !
Quote:It's been reported that in the trove of stolen/hacked accounts of actresses such as Jennifer Lawrence and others, there are also nude pics of Donald Sterling in a bathroom dusting his naked butt with baby powder.
Sterling is being pressured for an apology. Also, an extra billion is being offered for the sale of the Clippers, in which he is expected to refuse and file a lawsuit.
