It seems to me that in craps, the tide comes in and the tide goes out. It's hard to read because the water is choppy most of the time. And the choppiness has a normal distribution: pretty damn choppy out to +1 standard deviation, where the water gets smooth and you know the tide is coming in and you should be on the front line. And out beyond -1 standard deviation, the water gets smooth and you can tell the tide is going out and obviously you should be on the back line. The tide has a period of about 45 minutes. Any questions?

Some shooters don't know their own strengths in Craps. I played with a gentleman a couple weeks back, he bought in for $1,000. He was the very first shooter on a brand new table; I was standing next to him. I asked him what his "unique" numbers were that he rolls a lot, he replied "I throw Dice very well but stick with Pass Line, Odds and Place Bets of 6 & 8".

He proceeded to throw SIX 9's before sevening out. He did not make any bets on the 9. His next roll; he established and hit the "9" 3 times in a row before sevening out on the 4th point which was a 5. Small sample size but his "unique" number at least on this table is "9". I made good money on his first two rolls and was ready to load up on his next roll and start making serious money. He was the hottest shooter on a cold table and we were all waiting for his next roll. Right before his next roll, he bets his entire remaining bankroll ($500) on the shooter right before him and loses it all.

Lesson Learned; Roll with the "Tide" while it's happening, don't wait for the next time the "hot" shooter gets the dice, like I learned the hard way, there might not be a next time!

There is a tide in the affairs of men.
Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune;
Omitted, all the voyage of their life
Is bound in shallows and in miseries.
On such a full sea are we now afloat,
And we must take the current when it serves,
Or lose our ventures.

Googling this to remind me where it comes from, I got as far as "there is a" when it auto-filled the rest as a suggestion. I hadn't even typed "t" yet.

I remember it from an Agatha Cristie novel. But where does it really come from? (too lazy to google)

I can't tell you how disappointed I was to find out that this wasn't a thread about college football... it's hard to think The Tide will be able to continue their dominance this year, but they should field a good team and still could be the best team in the SEC.

When E.D. Hirsch Jr wrote his landmark book, "Cultural Literacy" 25 years ago, he stated:

My father used to write business letters that alluded to Shakespeare. These allusions were effective for conveying complex messages to his associates, because, in his day, business people could make such allusions with every expectation of being understood. For instance, in my father's commodity business, the timing of sales and purchases was all-important, and he would sometimes write or say to his colleagues, "There is a tide," without further elaboration. Those four words carried not only a lot of complex information, but also the persuasive force of a proverb. In addition to the basic practical meaning, "act now!" what came across was a lot of implicit reasons why immediate action was important.
...
To say "There is a tide" is better than saying "Buy (or sell) now and you'll cover expenses for the whole year, but if you fail to act right away, you may regret it the rest of your life." That would be twenty-seven words instead of four, and while the bare message of the longer statement would be conveyed, the persuasive force wouldn't. Think of the demands of such a business communication. To persuade somebody that your recommendation is wise and well-founded, you have to give lots of reasons and cite known examples and authorities. My father accomplished that and more in four words, which made quoting Shakespeare as effective as any efficiency consultant could wish. The moral of this tale is not that reading Shakespeare will help one rise in the business world. My point is a broader one. The fact that middle-level executives no longer share literate background knowledge is a chief cause of their inability to communicate effectively. "

Education is often frowned on by employers. In the sixties there was a flood of computer jobs: keypuncher, printer attendant, etc. Low level, little education required. This tended to increase as even jobs for college graduates became rather regimented and the business world was flooded with morons with diplomas.
Drammatis Personae was used by one lawyer but the document came back Dramatis Personal. Ampersand was dictated but a college graduate type And Person. A general dumbing down of the entire population.

There is a tide now would related to a detergent.

But if there is a tide at the craps table...please let me have a tide schedule!

I used to manage a long range sonar. One newspaper article had an image that they used for a story (see above). I liked the image and the use of the quote (the quote is from Othello), so I put it on a report about citizen objection to the device. For some reason, it got a captain very upset.
