I think that if you're a moderate drinker and are on vacation on a week long cruise and want to maintain a good buzz, you probably would consume 6 drinks a day x 6 days = 36 drinks @ $8 (wine, spirits) = $288 + 15% gratuity.

Celebrity has a number of alcohol packages:

Classic ($44/night + 15% grat): includes all beer up to $5 and wine up to $8 a glass, plus some non-alcoholic beverages (coke products, coffee, water)
Premium ($54/night + 15% grat: includes all drinks up to $12 and all non-alcooholic beverages (the above + perrier, san pellegrino, smoothies, red bull, vitamin water, etc).

I think if you're a heavy drinker you go with one of the two packages and if not, go a la carte.

They're including bottles of wine with dinner
in the $1200 tab.

I'd call six drinks per day, anywhere and regardless of cost, a drinking problem.

On other thiings, I, too, would bring along my own alcohol to a casino or a cruise, if I were cheap and had no class at all :)

Being cheap has nothing to do with it. Its all
about money management. I refuse to give
casinos the huge profits they make on alcohol
markup's. I'd do the same thing if I was a
millionaire. In fact, I know a woman who's worth
over 20mil, and has never bought a new car
in her life. She's buys a used luxury car every
2 years, because its financially sound. Is she
'cheap'? How do you think she got rich, by
throwing money down the drain?

No, Bob, bringing a bottle of vodka is not cheap. Using the free soft drinks supplied by the casino to mix your drinks IS cheap. What wouldn't be cheap is bringing your own vodka and soft drinks and mixing your drinks. That would be frugal, sound financial advice. The effort of going downstairs and filling up cups of soda has a personal cost. A reasonable 2L bottle or 6 pack of your favourite soft drink should go for no more than $2. While I can absolutely appreciate saving $5+ per drink by mixing your own, I can't appreciate saving $.33 / drink by getting your own soft drinks, especially when you're gambling in a casino where the expected value per bet is probably over $.33!

I'm the same way. My wife drinks at the tables where they are free, not at the restaurant. I bring in my own bottled water as I'm not paying $8 for a bottle of Evian from the mini-bar or even $3 for a bottle of Aquafina at the gift shop downstairs when I get go to Walgreens and pick up a case of water for $4.

Cruises get around this by not letting you bring alcohol on board or charging a corkage fee for alcohol that you do bring on board. No sneaking around here. The same is true on airlines. Just try opening up that bottle of vodka that you got in duty-freee. Good luck.

You don't get it. Its all about screwing the casino out of the
incredible profit they make on every drink. On well drinks, the
booze in an average mixed drinks cost the casino about .25
cents. Most of them now charge $4.50 (or more) per drink. It
tickles me to death to screw them, you have no idea. Its because
I used to be the one making all the profit, I'm not going to be
the chump and give them the satisfaction.
