Vegas veterans/locals, please help with my list of hotels

Check the hotel reviews on this site. I'm sure there are reviews for Terribles, Fitzgerald's and Four Queens.

Gold Coast is the one near the Rio, Suncoast is in NW Vegas
If you want to be around more stuff, I would suggest downtown, although Terrible's is within walking distance to the Strip.
Here's how I would rank your choices based on hotel quality alone:
(1) Suncoast
(2) Terrible's / Gold Coast
(3) Four Queens / El Cortez
(4) Fitzgeralds
(5) Golden Gate / Gold Spike.
If you do stay at the Gold Spike, we would like to see a review!
Suncoast may be nice, but it's a LONG, LONG, LONG way from the Strip, Downtown, or the airport. If you don't have your own car, the taxi fares to get there, or to get from there to anywhere else, will eat up any savings you might receive.
Las Vegas is the land of cheap hotel rooms. Here's a list of others you might consider. Keep in mind that some of these have additional "resort fees":
Sahara, Circus Circus, Imperial Palace, Hooters, Excalibur, Palace/Texas/Boulder Station, Fiesta Rancho/Henderson, Vegas Club.

The El Cortez quotes $27/night for midweek hotel rooms in November. It's a perfectly decent place to stay, it has a good restaurant, and it's a five minute walk from the main bus terminal, where you can take the Deuce down the Strip if you so desire.
The Gold Spike isn't nearly as frightening as it used to be, the location is very convenient, and the rooms are surprisingly nice. That $7.77 deal will work just about any time except holidays, and the regular room rate (somewhere in the neighborhood of $25-30).
If you've played at the Western--or ever stayed there for the infamous $16/night special in the 90s--then just about any place you pick will seem like the Dubai Hilton :)
Bear in mind Gold Spike's table games (just BJ?) have limited hours.

Terrible's is about 2 Vegas blocks from the strip. Walking from Terrible's to Bally's is about the same distance as walking from Bally's to the north side of the Palazzo. It's not a bad walk at all.

I'd second Terribles because of its nearness to Ellis Island. That place is worth a stop for the terrific undisclosed $6.95 steak dinner deal, and it's a fun place to low-roll for a few hours. Plus, you get some free slot play just for joining the player's club.
My vote goes to Suncoast also. Not only are there decent clientel who go there, it's a CLEAN casino/hotel and IT'S IN A NICE PART OF TOWN! Doesn't that mean anything to any of you who look for the cheapest way out??

In the first place, those hotels are nowhere nearly as bad as JL describes. But even more importantly, as he so eloquently informs us, if you stay and play at one of those places, you will never run into JerryLogan!

Jerry, the OP said the room quality was not paramount to him - he's stayed at the WESTERN for pete's sake!?! I'd say that Terrible's or Gold Coast would be my choice - relatively convenient to all modes of transport and close enough to the strip, but off enough that he doesn't have to go near it if he doesn't want to.

True, but a cab from the airport to the Suncoast will probably exceed the cost of a night's room. There was a post or two about Terrible's and their airport shuttle. Are there any other hotel shuttles running?

To each their own. If those dumps are your standard, great. Terribles is FULL of smoke & low lifes, and Ellis Island is riddled with cheap hookers, skanks, street bums and pimps....and it smells the part.

Even if gambling access isn't a factor, I would argue that distance to general entertainment is important. Sitting in a (relatively nice) room at the Suncoast would get pretty boring, especially by the third day. So, assuming that the OP would like to people watch or generally get out of the room/hotel without having to pay for a cab or bus, I don't see how proximity to other attractions would be irrelevant.
El Cortez has a shuttle, but I think it's only TOO the airport, not from. The Koval Ellis Island Super 8 has a shuttle to and from the airport but their rates push $40 (but free wi-fi!). That's an option not a lot of people consider, and I've heard good things. I don't rate the beds. I always have trouble sleeping in hotel rooms because of those huge comforters they use now. I get too hot. I prefer the old nylon blankets.
TUSCANY rooms are VERY nice, but I believe they have gone the route of adding a $20-ish resort fee, which adds up if you are looking for a good rate.
And although I don't ever plan on staying at the Super 8 at ELLIS ISLAND, we enjoy going there to play for a few hours every trip. DEFINITELY try the $ 6.95
steak dinner. I have never been disappointed with the thick sirloin.

That's good news about the Tuscany because I'm staying there next week. I'll report back. The resort fee is $10+taxes so I'll see what the final bill comes to.
As of about a year ago, internet access at Tuscany was available in the open areas and near the pool and exhibit areas. An 11.00 fee was required for internet in your room.
