That is indeed a shame. I already commented on it and posted the video at DT.

I'm glad he added a bit of humour to his announcement (the extra "u" to honour his Canadian upbringing).

By coincidence, I recently checked on the contracts of Pat Sajak and Vanna White, and saw that Trebek also was renewed through 2022. Hope he makes it to then and has a proper retirement!

Terrible, terrible news. It doesn't get much worse than Stage IV pancreatic cancer in terms of being hopeless.

Alex has been such a cultural icon, he does his job with so much intelligence and grace. Most of us know him only through his television show - but I do feel like I know him. Dammit.

Isn't that what Michael Landon had? He
was doing pushup's for the cameras
when he was diagnosed, to show how
he wasn't sick at all. A few weeks later
he was gone.

Isn't that what Michael Landon had?

Quote: Wikipedia

In February 1991, Landon began to suffer severe abdominal pain while on a skiing vacation in Utah.[14] On April 5, 1991, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which had metastasized to his liver and lymph nodes. The cancer was inoperable and terminal. On May 9, 1991, he appeared on The Tonight Show to speak about the cancer and to condemn the tabloid press for their sensational headlines and inaccurate stories, including the claim that he and his wife were trying to have another child. During his appearance, Landon pledged to fight the disease and asked fans to pray for him. On May 21, 1991, he underwent successful surgery for a near-fatal blood clot in his left leg.[15] In June 1991, he appeared on the cover of Life Magazine after granting the periodical an exclusive private interview about his life, his family, and his struggle to live. On July 1, 1991, at age 54, Landon died in Malibu, California.

That's less then three months from diagnosis to death.

If you haven't heard, Trebek is already back taping new episodes of Jeopardy. He vows to fight and stay working although he's been talking retirement for several years. It looks like he'll try to finish out his contract in 2020.

Who will replace him?

Trebek suggests one of these three...

LA Kings announcer Alex Faust

CNN analyst Laura Coates

Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz

Another name often mentioned...

Jeopardy champion Ken Jennings
Have you tried 22 tonight? I said 22.

Never seen a single episode of Jeopardy. I've
seen it lots of times in movies like Groundhog
Day, or spoofs on SNL, but I haven't
watched daytime TV since I was a kid.

One of the pleasures I get from final Jeopardy is a special challenge of trying to guess the answer based on only knowing the category just as it goes to commercial. I've succeeded three times over the years in guessing the answer without knowing the question.

Most recently the category was "German Americans." I managed to guess the answer based on the category alone. Let's see who gets it first.

Three good guesses -- bzzzt to them all.

My wife guessed "Einstein," which was also the wrong answer given by one of the contestants. We give ourselves partial credit if we get the same wrong answer as a contestant. Again, this is before knowing the question.

If you are referring to the Final a few weeks ago, I would not have guessed it by the category alone, but I did get it with the clue.

Albert Einstein, but I figured he would be too obvious for a Final answer.

One of my Final Jeopardy pleasures is getting the answer right when the three contestants missed it. I can probably count the times that has happened on one hand.

Joeman, you got the same wrong answer as my wife.

One of the informal rules for blind guesses on Final Jeopardy is the "too famous"/"too obvious" rule. For that reason, Einstein and Trump could not possibly be the correct answers.

Yes, this was the category just a couple of weeks back.

I also enjoy guessing the answer Of final Jeopardy.
I have only succeeded twice.
Einstein was my guess but knew it was probably wrong due to the too obvious clause.

I so rarely get the final question correct that I consider my answer good enough if one of the contestants guesses it.

I think von Braun was a Jeopardy answer in the not too distant past, but I don't recall if it was a Final or just a regular category question.

As an aside, the Germans of the time when Kissinger and family fled the country did not consider him German.

I am trying to figure out how they choose these episodes to replay over the last two weeks. They seem so random, and frankly much less interesting than any number of episodes with great drama down to the last minute. As an overview of Trebek's career, I think the choices could have been much more illustrative of his style and how he handled the weird things that sometimes happened.

I saw on the Jeopardy! Facebook page that they chose to do "Alex Around the World" episodes these two weeks. These episodes feature a category where Alex did clues on location.

So close today -- the Final Jeopardy category was "French History." My category-only guess was Marat (the guy who got stabbed and murdered in his bathtub at the start of the French Revolution). The correct answer was Charlotte Corday, who is the woman who stabbed Marat. So close!!!

Kudos to you guys for even being willing to appear on Jeopardy! I'd be mortified if I gave an incorrect answer (well, question) on national TV...so I'd pretty much be guaranteed to lose by virtue of only buzzing in if I was 100% absolutely sure of my question.

Here’s a fun little video about a YouTuber that lives in downtown Las Vegas. She appeared on Jeopardy in 2003. This is the same lady who did that video I posted about a couple weeks ago on the Carole Lombard crash site on Mount Potosi.
