The first paragraph excerpted above seems like a cheap shot in what I thought was a well-intentioned critique.

I don't know the relationship between the admins and ownership. I assumed that "greenness" implied some deeper connection with the owners than is perhaps the case. If that's not correct, then my apologies. There is more to the problem that has been relayed (other DDOS victims have dealt with it and recovered much more quickly), yet this thread devolves into a discussion of the html codes to display spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs. Again. I meant no offense to the admins to whatever extent that they, like us, are on the outside looking in.

Irregardless of the cheapness of the shot, the truth remains.

1. Response time sucks.
2. Poor response time causes fewer answers/comment/replies from the well-appreciated and acknowledged experts who frequent this site.
3. This generates less and less fly-by visits from non-regulars who have heard about this site and stop in looking for such expertise.
4. Who cares if the service improves once there is no one bothering to check and see if it has?

The admins (as distinguished from owners) have always been responsive and accommodating to me. I may have mistakenly assumed that they had a greater role in ownership, or in providing technical expertise in dealing with problems than is the case.

I keep stopping in to see if things have improved and if there is new stuff in the forums, Not so, and therefore, not so much.

As I said, you're not wrong. I made similar comments before you did, and share your concerns. It would be a great loss if this amalgamation of responsive experts dwindled away due to technical issues.

I am seeing progress, and that helps.

Slow to load.

This has become tedious.

Yes it has. At least for me a acknowledgement from someone who can change things gives me hope that the issue is being looked into. It's still very sporadic for me. One time it's better the next time it isn't.

I echo both sentiments, but I guess I'm just repeating myself.

Sporadic is right. Seems better right now, so maybe it's been resolved?

For the non-technical, an explanation from someone in the know, regardless of the color of their signature, would be just common courtesy. Hey - it's a free site, so nobody is entitled to an explanation if ownership wants to keep it to themselves. But it would avoid us constructing grassy knolls and fabricating pristine bullets.

I'm going to break out the Commodore64 and see if I can get with the program.

Someone must be targeting this site.

That’s one theory. Under DreamHost there were two acknowledged DDoS incidents, August 24 and 26. Both were reported as fixed within hours, and both targeted the hosting provider, not this site. Perhaps, just maybe, all other performance problems are due to design flaws.

Whatever fix was put in place isn't working. Pages still take 1-2 minutes to load and before they do, I get this message:

P.S. It took 5 tries just to post this.

There are times when accessing through work network that it won't let me get here because the network is "unsecure". So some how the security certificate still isn't correct. Other times it let's me in.

It's been great for a couple days now, but apparently, that's a double-edged sword.

The SSL certificate is valid. The trusted authority verifying it is Go Daddy. However, the certificate used does not list organizational information. A certificate listing organizational information would cost a lot of money as the issuing authority would verify the business getting the certificate. I don't know if any money was paid for the certificate in use, but a valid SSL certificate without the organizational information can be had for free: you just have to prove you have control of the domain for which it is issued. With or without the organizational information an SSL certificate provides security in that web site traffic is encrypted. Your work network may incorrectly say this site is insecure because the SSL certificate doesn't include the organizational information. You only need to be concerned about certificates with organizational information if you're doing sensitive transactions such as those involving money or confidential information.

Whoa! What service! I'm now getting email notices of new posts to threads I follow.

Ummm... Minor issue. I don't think the email alert system needs to tell me about an email I post to a thread to which I previously subscribed. But, that appears to be what is happening to me currently.

If I'm online and post to a thread, the email alert system should not tell me about that as a new email to the thread. But, if this is the best you can do (for now), it is not a big problem. Go wrestle with SSL certificates or something.
