An unusual topic came up on the last livestream when a viewer asked...

"When did Vegas hotels phase out Bibles in nightstands? I haven't seen them in many many years."

Neither the Wizard nor Heather knew anything about it. Why would they? As Vegas residents they wouldn't be staying in the resorts. True, the Wizard will occasionally stay in a Vegas hotel to review it, but he hasn't done that since covid started and even when he did I don't think "religious text availability" was on his checklist of things to report about. He does mention that while traveling he's seen a book on Buddhism next to a standard Gideon Bible, and that some hotel chains put a Book of Mormon in the drawer.

A quick online search yields scant results...

This Las Vegas Sun article from way back in 2003 isn't very helpful but, the fact that it was written suggests that some resorts do not stock Bibles.

This Fox News article from 2015 discusses how the Borgata Hotel Casino in Atlantic City has declined to accept Bibles from Gideons International, which often donates the books to hotels. Instead it will have a “library” of several different religious texts in the lobby. “Our method here is to be inclusive of all religions,” said Michael Facenda, director of marketing services for the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. “As much as we respect the Gideon Bible, it would only represent one group.” Local religious leaders felt that this overt announcement was a play for free bad-boy publicity (although imho it sounds more like lawyer's prattle).

Anyways, I'm reading here in the forum that several users have recently/are currently/will soon be visiting Vegas so question:

In your Vegas hotel room, when you open the nightstand drawer do you see...

a) a Gideon Bible?
b) a Bible and another holy text?
c) an empty drawer?
d) other?

Also, perhaps some users here with experience in the business [glances at Mission 146] can offer some insight into how the hotels and the Gideons are interacting these days.
Have you tried 22 tonight? I said 22.

I haven't seen a Gideon bible in a hotel room in years, and it's not remotely limited to Vegas.

I haven't stayed in a Vegas hotel room since the early days of this site. However, I'll ask visiting friends about it.

Side question -- Will you go to hell for stealing a Gideon's Bible? I've heard the church that pays for them is happy to give them away, but not everything you hear is true.

Or I might just call their local office at 702-648-9893.

I have not been to Vegas in years, but my take is smartphones are a lot more prevalent now than they used to be. People who want to read the Bible have the version they prefer downloaded on their device and can read it offline. Those who don't have it downloaded can access any version they want online. If they are paying for resort fees, they can download it or view it that way. Or when they are on casino floor or lobby, use the guest WiFi and download it

Speaking of Bibles.

When I was in 5th grade we had an older 60-70 ish "get off my lawn" neighborhood lady. Her property and house bordered a common field and wooded area where the neighborhood kids often played because of the bigger trees and open area with hills.

I can't remember exactly what mischief I had been up to that day, but I remember it wasn't anything terrible and wasn't even on her property. I knew to respect the elderly, but as a kid, when you're just doing kid stuff it's hard to understand why or how those things could possibly bother anyone. Whatever it was, it was enough to start a "war". The war lasted for years...Just kidding, it was probably a few weeks of her yelling at us(mostly at me) demanding we leave.

One afternoon a few of us were climbing the trees just outside her window when one of the younger kids fell and hurt his arm. We needed to get him to the closest adult's house for help. She heard the screaming and commotion and realize someone had been hurt and came outside. We were heading to the next closest house, one other than hers. She was yelling for us to stop so she could help, but we kept going.

The next day when I returned home from school she was sitting at our kitchen table having tea and talking with my Mom. She said hello using my name and asked me to sit with them. I knew I wasn't in trouble since I hadn't really done anything wrong and I noticed our family photos and a big expensive-looking white bible on the table. She introduced herself as Rose and started apologizing for the way she acted while explaining it wasn't very christ like.
She said she couldn't bare the fact that we hadn't come to her for help.

She then presented me with that big expensive-looking white bible that was on the table as a gift which she signed and dedicated to me. To Axel, May God keep you safe and fill your life with love, joy, and happiness. Your friend Rose.

She became friends with my mom and was like a grandmother to me until we moved away.

I did eventually read that bible she gave me when I was in the 8th grade. It took about one year of reading about 3 chapters a day.

I found the bible at my mother's house after she passed away. My sister showed interest after telling her the story (she wasn't living with us at the time) so I told her to take it and keep it safe.

One of the things I like about Jeopardy! is that they still use the Bible as one of their categories quite frequently. Is this endangered? Probably.

I agree that someone who wants to consider himself educated should be familiar with the Bible to some degree. However, if you want to just sit down and read it, I advise getting a modern language version.

Coincidentally, Jeopardy! recently convinced me I should be more familiar with the Bible stories, so I got a Kindle version of that for adults. You want to make sure you're getting that 'adult' category, btw, if you get a similar notion.

My Bible story:

When I was young our family was the occasional church goers going maybe once a month. At one point they were doing a "promotion" to get kids more involved. If a kid would go to church for 12 straight weeks they would be presented a Bible of their own in front of the congregation. My parents being frugal saw this as an opportunity for a free Bible. I went to church for 12 straight weeks, hating every moment of it and was eventually awarded my Bible in front of the congregation along with about 10 other kids. When the ceremony was over they had extra bibles and called up any kids that wanted one for free. I was pissed, disgusted, disappointed, and more. These kids got a bible and I had to spend 12 weeks in hell to get mine. I expressed to my parents what a scam that was and my parents never made me go to church again.

I think that is one of the reasons I still despise organized religion.

I also enjoy jeopardy and their Bible categories are usually popular. They really dropped the ball though during final Jeopardy category the Bible during tournament of champions. The clue was this letter to them written by Paul is the new testament epistle with the most old testament quotes. They accepted Hebrews as the correct answer. Problem is it is never clearly identified who wrote Hebrews. Fortunately it didn't affect the outcome of the tournament.answer should of been Romans, but it was a bad question for final Jeopardy.

I noticed that too, having heard recently that authorship of that epistle was uncertain for some reason

I suppose their defense would be that Hebrews was traditionally considered a Pauline epistle, and that they phrased it in a way that just went along with that. I don't remember how they phrased it.

If I had to take a stab at when I stopped noticing them it was probably 2016 or 2017, before the pandemic. Hotels used to have those small binders with details about their amenities, emergency info (usually duplicating what was on the door), phone numbers of airlines, etc. but those disappeared around the same time as well. It predates the pandemic, although the few ones that did have them in 2020 no longer have them at all.

That’s probably how it started. But back in the 1910s, there were far fewer hotel rooms!

The Gideon Society would send hotels as many as they asked for, for free. They also actively contacted every hotel to ask how many they wanted, or needed for replenishment.

The inside cover indicated that the Gigeons provided them for free and encourage guests to take them.

The hotel ‘merely’ had to put them in the rooms. That’s PITA #1.

The hotels needed to keep spares in stock and replace any that were missing from rooms. That’s PITA #2.

Now, a hundred years later, and the generally lower numbers of religious or semi-religious people there are, and those two PITAs are no
longer worth the effort.

I was in an abusive relationship for months before I finally got out of the door for good, at a casino hotel room with a Bible.

So, as the Bible says, "When God closes the door..." I told all my friends I walked into it.

When I managed a hotel, The Gideons would come by periodically---once every few years, perhaps---and would offer us cases of Bibles. The first few years I managed the hotel we would usually take some because, for one reason or another, the franchisor required that the rooms have a Bible in them. For that reason, we would take extra cases and have them in storage.

Eventually, the franchisor got rid of the Bible requirement, so as the bibles would be taken, we just replaced them (from the extra stock) until they ran out.

One day, I had someone throw a fit because they wanted a Bible in the room, but our storage was out and none of the (very few) vacant rooms happened to have one. After that, as rooms would check out, I'd go in and get any remaining Bibles and throw them in the trash. That way, if anyone called down complaining about not having one, I could just say, "None of the rooms have any." After that, the next time The Gideons appeared, I just told them that we didn't need any more bibles, thank you.

EDIT TO ADD: Also, what DJTeddyBear said. To that point, sometimes someone would call down actually offended that there was a Bible in there and ask US why we did that, so I would just tell them to call the franchisor and ask them because we were just complying with what used to be that brand standard.

We didn't consider it stealing because it didn't cost us anything in the first place.

Much better than defacing the inside of the Bible, as happened once or twice, which would then result in a guest complaint. A few guests were reasonable about it, but occasionally, I'd have to offer a 20% refund on the room if they were being extremely unreasonable and wouldn't accept, "I am simply not going to ask my housekeepers to turn through every page of the Bible to make sure it is unmarked after every guest."

I was just glad when the franchisor got rid of the requirement. As DJTeddyBear said, they were a non-zero amount of PITA that offered the hotel zero positive value. I'm especially not in favor of anything that can give guests an extra reason to b^%%$ about something, as if they can't come up with ridiculous complaints without the added help.

Really? I thought these were the instructions…
1. Clean toilet
2. Vacuum
3. Empty garbage cans
4. Read every page of the Bible in the room, and report all defacements to management.

Just was in Fairfield Inn in South Carolina just north of Savannah. There was a bible in the room.

Spent two nights at two different places on the strip that past few weeks. Not surprised by lack of bibles. Was surprised by no note pad and pens. I thought it was typical for those to be in hotel rooms for guests to use.

I obviously can't speak for every hotel on Earth, but for the one I used to manage, notepads and pens were once required by the franchisor and then they weren't anymore. We were required to have them available in the event guests asked for them and we usually kept pens in the room anyway, just not notepads.

Really? I thought these were the instructions…
1. Clean toilet
2. Vacuum
3. Empty garbage cans
4. Read every page of the Bible in the room, and report all defacements to management.

Just was in Fairfield Inn in South Carolina just north of Savannah. There was a bible in the room.

Great joke; I legitimately chuckled out loud.

That doesn't surprise me in South Carolina. Also, Fairfield Inn franchise standards might still require it; I would have no idea on them. I stayed at a Fairfield Inn recently, in fact, as we were attending a wedding last Summer; I do not recall whether or not that room had a Bible.

I finally discovered the usefulness of the audio recording part of my phone for taking notes. Only took a couple years before I noticed. And someone recording you with their phone camera as you give detailed instructions on something sure is handy and easier than any other method.

Pens, paper and envelopes are COVID casualties…

I spent 2 nights in AC for Xmas. Harrahs and Borgata. Neither had bibles, but Borgata (an MGM property) DID provide a pen and note pad, a housekeeping gratuity envelope, AND a printed/laminated room service menu. Harrahs had nothing.

But mail envelopes? I haven’t seen those in many years.

Of course there is! There are more churches than grocery stores in this state. I drive this one highway in a very rural part of the state, and there are two Baptist churches on either side of the road. Both full on Sundays and Wednesdays. Amazing.

There's also a lot less taxes, so I'm happy.

There were some mail envelopes and writing stationary in some of the hotels we stayed in, Vegas and in other U.S. states, as far back as maybe 2019, but post Covid have not seen any mail envelopes and some of the Vegas resorts have ceased with the notepads and pens. Station Casinos still have note pads as do Wynn. Some of the others seem to be phasing them out. This phase out of notepads and pens did not start immediately after Covid - in fact after the Covid shutdown they had the same notepads but were wrapping the pens in clear plastic.

When we are staying in the rooms about all we use those notepads for are to leave notes for housekeeping to remind them of special requests.

Some of the Vegas resorts, yes, are phasing out paper menus and everything is then visible online. But Resorts World Crockford's rooms have a bound room service menu, and that is a new resort that opened post Covid.

I used to take those note pads home and use them in the home and office until they started stacking up, and then I stopped bothering. Now I suppose that eventually those stacks will get used up.

Do you happen to know if the book was placed by property management, left by another guest unintentionally, or is an artifact of a guerilla "Little Free Library" program?

I recall other racy "art" books in other Cosmo rooms I've occupied in the past, so I believe it was placed by Cosmopolitan management.

All Cosmo rooms and especially suites have at least one sort of book like that in the living room or living room area.

But the Loft suite at Palms takes the cake with its Gisele book.
