Iowa might be the best case study for this. Iowa is allowed to give away alcohol to gamblers, but most casinos offer it minimally (Council Bluffs casinos are more open about the free drinks). People still pay to drink, and the prices aren't cheap.

Most of the pit supervisors treat it like the old buffet comp: If you gamble, we'll give you a buffet. The pit still has to "pay for it" though I'm not familiar with the accounting method or reason for tracking it.

I doubt any of the Ohio casinos would ever give alcohol away even if they could. My opinion is they figure at both Horseshoes (Cleveland and soon-to-be Cincy) that the homeless would try to take advantage of it (being downtown casinos). Both Hollywoods (Columbus and Toledo) require driving and there are no hotels, so there could be more of a liability on the part of the consumer. Free drinks make the temptation greater.

Good post Tiltpoul. Missouri has to charge a token price at a minimum, but all St. Louis/KC casinos charge typical bar prices. The reasoning I suspect is that most of the patrons drive to and from the casino, and also it will obv increase the profit margin for the players that do decide to drink. If I'm not driving, I'll occasionally drop ~$20 in drinks at the casino.

With free drinks in Tunica/Vegas, I'm consuming a LOT more when I'm not driving.

I was thinking of going up on Sunday or even tonight, but if it's still crowded, I'll wait a few weeks. Toledo is a bit farther, but it's a Hollywood, so I'll only go up for my casino chip and to walk around.

20% CET/80% Rock Ohio Caesars. It was almost denied a gaming license for the amount of debt they were carrying.

Before this place opened, in the newspapers they even warned people not to expect this place to be like Las Vegas, would not a tourist destination and was built for locals. Luckily I was smart enough to know what that meant and never lost $1 up there because I stayed away. Knew it was Hell on Cleveland before the first numbers came out thanks to all the numerous facebook rants.
