Had lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Mosca across the street from Fallsview. Mr. Mosca is a hot dog fan and there was a restaurant (Coco something?) advertising them. We played both Tiles and Pai Gow poker. Both of us experienced negative variance. But gambling in the non smoking casino makes the losses sting less!
As everyone on the forum would guess, Mr. and Mrs. M are the fine people his posts portray. Most importantly, I am promised home made ribs when I can make it down to Wilkes-Barre, PA!

It was wonderful, and I'll write it up in a report after we're all done. Regarding variance, we can also discuss regression to the mean. (Is that right for this situation? Probably not.) My first 5 hands in tiles were push, bo-bo, bo-bo, bo-bo, and wong-gong. Or something like that. A couple hours later I was down $50.

Mr mosca was a little rusty on the rules and strategy, so I asked him to show me what his plan was before setting the tiles. Since the pit boss did not want me to help him I basically would tell Mosca to ask for house ways if he was going to make a mistake. It happened on his first hand which ended in a push. But his next three hands were Bo bo, bo bo, and Wong Bo! The best three hand stretch I had ever seen.

I was ticked off at myself for constantly violating table etiquette, as well, which was rattling me. I enjoy the tiles, but you have to play often to get a good rhythm going, and to have a natural understanding of even basic play. Even at my most avid pace I only gamble a couple times a month, and tiles in Mohegan Pocono are in the smoking section, so I don't like going there. I just don't play often enough to be smooth. But the tiles satisfy my requirement that a game should have simple rules and sublime strategy. It's just that, as SOOPOO so eloquently put it, "the game is in a different language."

Thanks for the correction on my early lucky streak! Too bad they don't pay odds on those great hands, I'd have been in tall cotton.
