Rampart is offering a free buffet for veterans and a guest on Memorial Day.

I'm happy to jump all over these on Veteran's Day but something about accepting a bonus for prior service on Memorial Day, considering I'm around to collect the bonus in the first place, just feels wrong.

I generally don't go to these promotions when they are held on Veterans Day but I am glad that they do it them.

I'm not as concerned with someone offering free meals on that particular day BUT I do think we've gotten pretty far away from what a lot of our holidays were meant to honor. The whole holiday on Monday thing, while convenient for pretty much everyone, has turned too many into three day weekends and not days to honor those the date was set aside for.

I was making some purchases at a Home Depot one Memorial Day and the cashier asked me if I was a veteran. I don't carry my DD214 around with me, but she took my word and gave me a discount.

During the first Gulf War, Harrahs AC gave free parking to veterans. When I was exiting I pointed to my Disabled Veterans license plate and was waved thru.

When I returned a few weeks later, I pointed to my plates. The attendant said the war was over and the free parking for veterans was dropped. I just shook my head and smiled.

Home Depot only gives the discount on Memorial and Veterans Day.

Lowes gives a 10% discount every day to veterans.

If you are a veteran I would recommend visiting your nearest VA center and get a veterans ID.

Home Depot will give a discount if you have a current or past military ID. Sometimes, though, the cashiers are unaware of the discount, so you have to escalate to a higher CSR.

They should invite Gold Star moms and their families.

I have gone to Home Depot and even after escalating it, they deny the veterans discount. I never have that problem at Lowes.

Would you prefer that they only provide those perks to the soldiers that didn't come home?

Quite frankly, military people get the short end of the stick a lot. I would encourage business to give these type of military perks every day of the year.

By the way: I was not in the military, but am thankful for each one that serves and comes back alive.

Actually, on Memorial Day, I'd prefer they give the perks to the families who can prove a Purple Heart.

Living veterans have their own day. It's in November, not May.

Why assume that Purple Heart recipients are deceased?

I think you're looking for proof that the military person was killed in combat, or as a result of war injuries.

But then you'd have the added effort to prove family relationships.

Giving these perks directly to military people holding an active or retired military ID card makes things simple.

I was at a VA clinic talking to a fellow Vietnam vet who was a marine. He was wearing a marine t-shirt. A WWII marine walked up to him and asked him what unit he was with. My friend answered him and then the WWII vet asked my friend if he got a Purple Heart.

My friendly replied "No, the whole purpose of war is to NOT get a Purple Heart". The WWII vet just smiled and walked away.

I know someone who was wounded in VN and received 6 Purple Hearts. He did 3 tours in VN. He told me that when he got his 5th Purple Heart, the company commander told him that if he got anymore Purple Hearts, they were going to make the VC pay for it!!!!

While there's a certain amount of truth to that, does the opposition to a Purple Heart change if the alternative is a Toe Tag?
